RE: Scottish Independence
Would love the pro union side to concentrate on explaining how Scotland benefits from being part of the union rather than scaremonging about the consequences of Independence

Would love the pro independence side to concentrate on putting forward intelligent counter arguments so we can make an informed decision rather than dismissing everything the other side says as 'scaremongering'.

RE: Scottish Independence
There was an interesting piece on the radio this morning (not entirely serious, I guess but who knows) about The Shetlands wanting independence from Scotland.
What a setback that would be if they ran off with half of the oil money for themselves. A good old Viking pillage.
See how Salmond likes having it done to him.

RE: Scottish Independence
There were murmurings about the Shetland Islands wanting independence from Britain last year too. I think many Shetlands people are very serious about this, as interviews on BBC radio with several residents revealed that many of them feel closer to Scandinavia than Scotland or Britain because of the heritage.

I've yet to see a really conclusive argument from Salmond, I do feel a lot of it is anti-UK countering instead of an actual argument. I know Alistair Carmichael said this morning that the government "refuse to be drawn in to a side show" and "are not here for stunts" but if Cameron had agreed to a debate wouldn't it have given him a chance to put his views across in a public forum and maybe gain some support from the Scottish voters who are perhaps undecided so far? What do you guys think of the open debate being proposed by Salmond?

I think Cameron's in a no-win situation there. Eck will spin anything he says as trying to 'bully' the Scots (his stock reply to anything coming from Westminster). If Cameron had been a Scot himself, as Gordon Brown was as PM, he would have had more credibility in a head to head debate.

Eck is a conniving, patronising, little git but he's a showman. A head to head debate would be 'showtime' for him, and Cameron knows this.

Does that mean independence from the UK as well?

You're right. It wouldn't ever be a real debate, just a load of spin and bullshit.
There'd be so much deflection that the front row would need body armour.

Gordon would have been slagged off for staying at Westminster, although ISTR Salmond did just that at first, until the Scots Parliament proved to have staying power (or until the SNP realised nobody else in the party has his publicity-seeking qualities).
