I wonder when warriner passed his eyesight test...he clearly needs to take another one pretty quickly!! Not only that I really do think that the sending off was harsh if it was a deliberate handball and the ball was going wide at the time.

If anything I would wonder if Arsenal could appeal the red card since he has admitted he made a mistake in sending off the wrong player.

Clubs can appeal mistaken identity, but if the referee admits he made a mistake the FA can pro-actively review the incident anyway.

So there is no chance the red card can be withdrawn based on the fact it was issued to the wrong player?

It won't be withdrawn if the FA decide to review the incident based on mistaken identity, as in that case the red card will be transferred to the correct player.

Didn't a ref get dropped from the EPL a few years ago for making too many mistakes and had to do time in the Championship. Have to feel sorry for the teams and fans in the lower leagues if they are seen as the punishment though.
Allowing for the odd honest mistake, a ref who makes too many errors of jusdgement over a number of games should be suspended and not put in charge of a match again until they have had a remedial training course in my opinion. Those officiating should be whiter than white if they are doling out punishment to players.

Since referees became professional in 2001 there are 5 who have been demoted from the select list to the national list. None of these have since been promoted again, but the last one - Stuart Atwell - is young for a referee and has time on his side to make a return to reffing in the Prem.

I doubt if Andre Marriner is in any danger of demotion as he is not only one of England's select referees, he is a FIFA referee too.

As far As Warriner is concerned, he should accept that he has to accept some form of punishment for his mistake
