Ali Carter has battled past Chinese prospect Xiao Guodong to win 10-8 in a high quality encounter.
I have been watching snooker for many many years but I have to say in all those years I have not seen a player with the potential that Xiao has. An old head on young shoulders and a balanced game.
He may have just lost out today but this is a player who I believe is destined for great things going forward.

Two last frame deciders played out tonight.
Ryan Day withstood a late three frame surge from Stephen Maguire to send the Scot crashing out.
In the other match which was nip and tuck between Shaun Murphy and Jamie Cope it was the former World Champion that eventually prevailed after winning the last two frames.

Yeah me too.
There are not many people in sport I hold in utter contempt but Maguire is one.
Anyway........ moving on........
It has been a quite amazing day at the Crucible yet again.
Michael White forced Mark Selby into a final frame decider from 5-1 and 8-4 down before the Jester from Leicester eventually sealed victory.
But Ding Junhui is out after a quite remarkable performance from qualifier Michael Wasley who showed nerves of steel to seal a famous comeback victory in a last frame decider. Ding had won five ranking titles up to this event but once again he has suffered defeat in the biggest event of them all.
Elsewhere John Higgins is in danger of exit trailing Alan 'Angles' McManus 6-3 and Joe Perry is into round two after beating Jamie Burnett 10-7.
