RE: Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
Australian police are examining debris washed up on a beach in Perth, SW Australia in the last 24 hours.
One piece is described as a section of sheet metal the length of a car, with clearly visible rivets. The head of the Australian Transport Safety Board said it was significant enough to look at photographs of, although they weren't getting excited about it.
Meanwhile, the Australian PM vowed to keep up the search, although it has been suspended at the moment because of a tropical cyclone in the area.

Does anyone know what the searchers are actually looking for? Are they anticipating that there will be large sections of the plane still intact or are they assuming that the plane would have burst into a million pieces?

Initial examination has suggested that the debris is not from MH370. I had a feeling that this would be yet another dead end. Still nothing from the underwater search either.

"Police are looking at whether a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bangalore was SABOTAGED, forcing it to make an emergency landing this morning. Flight MH192 had to turn back and land at the Malaysian capital's airport when a tyre burst during take-off. On 24 March, another Malaysia Airlines flight, MH066 from Kuala Lumpur, was forced to land in Hong Kong after it suffered an electrical failure on the way to Incheon, South Korea. With the disappearance of flight MH370, that makes a total of 3 incidents in just a few weeks. As a result, police have been ordered by the Malaysian government to look into the possibility that Malaysia Airline's planes are being sabotaged." (Daily Mirror)
Any new leads on this?

No, but there's been yet another incident today, as another Malaysia Airlines plane has been forced to turn back in mid-air due to technical issues, the 4th incident involving the airline in the last few weeks. The planes’s landing gear was unable to retract after take off and it had to return to Malaysia.

So we have a burst tyre, electrical problems and stuck landing gear. All fairly common problems for airlines and more likely to be maintainence issues than sabotage.

I'm thinking the same. So what if poor maintenance has led to this, which would explain a few things regarding how it was handled from the start by the officials. I can only imagine the trouble that could be caused if it turned out that this could have been avoided if the plane had been better maintained.

Could it be that the US shot down Flight MH370, maybe accidentally, and are now hoping it stays a secret forever? Or put it another way, why hasn't the US provided any radar data regarding the plane's disappearance from it's advanced radar installation at it's military base on Diego Garcia?

I'm not surprised these conspiracy stories are starting to rear their head again. I noticed the other day the Daily Mirror was revisiting the idea that the plane was on the ground somewhere - it landed in Pakistan according to them. Since the search in the Indian Ocean hasn't found any physical evidence, it was only a matter of time before alternative explanations for the plane's whereabouts were being put forward once more.
