RE: The 2014 World Cup in stats
- No team has ever lost their opening two games at the World Cup and advanced from the group.

- The last time England lost their opening two games of a major tournament was Euro 88 (lost all three group games).

- Roy Hodgson has lost his last four games at the World Cup (two with Switzerland, two with England).

- England have lost their opening two games of a World Cup for the first time ever.

- Luis Suarez has had both of Uruguay's shots on target in this game, both of them goals.

Some stats from the England-Uruguay match.

* As in England's first match, Glen Johnson had more touches of the ball than any other England player (96 touches).

* England had 63% possession but still lost - this is the most possession any losing team has had in the tournament.

* Luis Suarez received a pass every 183 seconds - more often than any other Uruguay player, but less often than every England player.

* Edinson Cavani covered a distance of 11,334m - but Nicolás Lodeiro was only on the pitch for 67'36" and still managed to cover 9,386m.

* Alvaro Pereira was timed at 33.08km per hour. Rooney had England's top speed (30.67), until overtaken by substitute Lallana (31.25).

Are Scotland still the only team to be undefeated in the group stage and not progress?

No, Scotland did it in 1974, Cameroon did it in 1982, Belgium in 1998 and New Zealand in 2010.

All got 3 draws from their matches, except Scotland who got a win and 2 draws but were eliminated on goal difference.

Are there any stats regarding the number of yellow cards / red cards issued per match? I'm sure that the referee's are being more lenient than in the previous World Cup.

With the latest sending off been Kostas Kasouranis of Greece against Japan there have been 164 red cards in World Cup history from 1930 to present.

In 2010 there were 17 red cards, in 2006 28 sendings off and back in 2002 again 17 received their marching orders.

This years competition so far there have been 5 red cards !
