I can't see how Dyke's blueprint can work if he can't get the PL on board and supporting it. To me the PL needs to be restructured from the inside too as swell as the FA. also the supporters' association should be given a seat on the board at both the FA and PL so that OUR concerns are heard way better than they probably have done in the past as it is our hard earned cash that keeps some clubs in existence. Incidentally does anyone know how many clubs
folded last season?

The only thing we should be worrying about how much are we paying for tickets this coming season. I guess not many PL teams will be freezing/cutting prices that's for sure.

Will never happen. Why do you say we are light years behind everyone else in the world? On a domestic level the Premiership is one of the best and the championship can hold its own against similar leagues. If you mean at a national level then the Premier League are not overly interested in the national team. Its not their concern. They are interested in promoting their own league and generating as much income as they can for themselves and the clubs they represent. Also what would be the point of inviting supporters associations. What would they offer professionally that would move the national game on? You only have to look in here at all the armchair experts who each have a differing opinion on football and how to cure its problems.
England did what two other teams in their group did not manage in not losing to Costa Rica. They were no worse than Italy or Spain and don't forget they qualified in the first place in order to have their under achieving tournament. The World Cup doesn't start in June every four years. It starts two years before where you have to earn the right to reach 'the finals'. Plenty of teams didn't get that far.

I know the World Cup doesn't start in June every four years and all the rest of it. And I'll take back the comment that we are light years behind the rest of the world to if it makes you happier and since when have we the hard working fans who pay the prices at the turnstile have had a voice within the FA or FL and they sit up and take notice of what we say? 606 is the only way we can make our own voice heard and I doubt very much if those at the FL or FA or PL ever listen to it on a regular basis. I think the PL does need to take more of an interest in our national side. After all the make up of that team is picked from the clubs that play in the PL!! I wonder had we gone to Brazil with a few players from the Championship would the results have been any different? possibly yes, but we have to realise we need to find a strategy & game plan that for once we can make the world sit up and take notice for a change.
And as far as I'm concerned, if we don't get off to a good start in the Euro qualifiers in September then how many years will it take us to find a winning formula? The group is by no means easy, that's for sure.

even the german management have said there new attacking style is based on what teams like United Arsenal and chelsea were playing. said before this new england side with the kids is good it just needs time to develop but thats the problem with england fans and media if it isnt done in a season then its all bad again it took the germans nearly a decade to develop this team we need at least 4 years i reckon as both the next 2 tournaments are in europe they can progress

RE: World Cup 2014 Brasil
I don't think that it's wrong to say that a key dilemma in the English game is the dysfunctional relationship between the PL and the FA. But I think it is a bit naïve to think that a major change can just happen or that we, as supporters, can force it to happen.

If you were Chairman or Chief Exec of the Premier League, your first responsibility would be to your shareholders -- i.e. the Clubs. The England team is someone else's problem. The Clubs look out for themselves, just as the player looks out for himself. That's normal and it's a bit rich to think that any one of us would do any different. We play the hand we are dealt. And there is nothing that The FA can do to change any of that.

The FA can only affect what it has the power to affect and that is grassroots football, coaching and coach certification. If we want to bake a better cake, a good starting point is to have better ingredients, which means more technically gifted and more tactically astute and adaptable players. That starts on the playground. So it isn't about the next tournament or the one after that. It is about the one after that.

Not that Greg Dyke is asking me, but my blueprint would be the following:
  • More investment in grassroots facilities
  • More investment in age-appropriate coaching
  • If we must go on fact-finding junkets (presumably to Germany for the next 8 years), then we should focus on what they are doing with the kids and not obsessing over the tactical Gospel of Joachim
  • Have the guts to take punitive measures against players who refuse their under-17 and under-21 call-ups (i.e. let the message go out far and wide that you won't have a hope in hell of making the senior England squad -- and thus increasing your earning potential -- if you shirked your responsibility to the junior teams)

That last one may be wishful thinking, but not beyond the realms of possibility. I would love to see an England manager -- in the face of criticism from fans and the media -- refuse to name the next young English "phenom" to a squad because the player didn't take seriously his responsibilities at U17 or U21 level. You'd only have to do it once or twice before the whole incentive structure would change. And that IS within the power of The FA.

Just IMHO, of course...

I always thought the FA was / is the Premier League .
The FA have drawn up more "blueprints" than the average architect .Trouble is they never see them through .Look at the fiasco over the Academy Centre (Pride Park is it called ?) .Half built then mothballed for a few years .Recently completed .There's no fluency in their actions .
Then there's the old Club v Country chestnut ,that always rears its head .
The England national team always fares low down on the agenda for most club chairman / owners .

No, the FA is the official governing body for the sport and responsible for all of the lower leagues and, of course, the FA Cup. It was responsible for the old "First Division" of the Football League, which -- in 1991 -- broke away to incorporate as a separate business that was called the Premier League.

The critical issue was the distribution of television income. All of the value was generated by a handful of top clubs, but the income was distributed across the whole game (including all of the lower leagues, grassroots football, the England team, game administration, etc.). At a time when the top clubs were faced with massive bills for stadia upgrade in the wake of Hillsborough, Heysel, etc., they argued that they could get a better deal for themselves and their supporters if they broke away from the Football League.

Ironically, it was Greg Dyke -- when he was chairman of LWT -- who precipitated the whole thing. Now he is chairman of The FA and dealing with the consequences of his own actions. So he will always be reluctant to voice too much criticism of the PL, because he was the Dr Frankenstein and the Premier League is his monster!

Importantly, it is the FA that is a member of organisations like FIFA and UEFA, so the Premier League needed FA support to remain in international competitions and to retain credibility when it was first being founded. To establish the Premier League in the first place, the clubs needed the FA's blessing. That's why the FA retains the power to set the rules, discipline players and clubs, and pronounce on things like "fit and proper person" tests for club ownership.

A key mistake that they made -- though I suppose it only seems obvious in hindsight -- is to not insist on some key provisions like the availability of players for international duty or the FA's jurisdiction over academy set-ups and other aspects of club management that have a material impact on the national team. Now the Premier League has so much money, power and clout that the FA cannot force these measures on them and every issue is a matter of negotiation. Hence the dysfunction!

Pride Park is Derby County's stadium. I think you are talking about the National Football Centre, which is not far away in Burton. You're right that it was an on-again-off-again project that was finally completed last year. Whether or not it will have any effect remains to be seen. The players seem to rave about how good it is, but I don't see why that should make any difference, when they already spend most of their time at the state-of-the-art training grounds of Chelsea, ManU, Liverpool, etc... How can a few days at Burton -- no matter how good it is -- make any real difference? On the other hand, the FA is constantly harping that its primary goal is not to train players, but to train coaches. That has to be a good thing, if it's true.

RE: World Cup 2014 Brasil
The World Cup seems to have been massive in the USA and Americans are really getting into football.

I noticed this comment on CNN.

"To me, Soccer represents athleticism at its best. These athletes are so much more appealing to watch than the 400-pound men protected with helmet, pads, mouth guard, and 100 pounds of fat laced with steroids as they pile up on each other. Don't get me wrong, I'm American and love football, hockey, baseball, golf, you name it, but these soccer guys are some pretty marvelous specimens of the human race!"

Someone gave a positive response as follows.

"Couldn't agree more with your comment. It is a great spectacle to see these athletes play for over 90 minutes non-stop. No commercials, no stoppage, no nothing...just play. Great sport."

Not everyone agreed though.

"Goes on way too long without much happening. Got to be the most boring sport ever invented. Whoever heard of a proper sport in which you could get a scoreless game? My suggestion to improve soccer is to limit the matches to one hour and eliminate the goalkeeper."
