Dr Who

Peter Capaldi is the guest on the One Show now.

'Dr Who: World Tour'. This has never occurred before in this history of this programme. I saw pictures of Capaldi and Coleman at the end of this tour in Mexico City and, not surprisingly considering the crammed packed schedule, they both looked exhausted.

Not really fussed where they go to hype the programme. Just bothered that they make a decent series for the first time in the last few years. I really do hope that the new Doctor means new and fresh ideas. With Moffat at the helm I fear River bloody Pond or a comedy act is only ever an episode away.

Of course they will have to get a new Doctor should Scotland vote yes for independence. Can hardly have a foreigner as the lead of a flagship programme at the British Broadcasting Company
Capaldi was ok but a typical convoluted Moffat storyline. He needs to be replaced by someone who knows how to tell a simple story of good v bad.

I think it's a safe bet following that first episode that Capaldi's 12th Doctor will be darker, grittier and a lot scarier than his previous incarnation. I think this Doctor's personality will demand meaningful storylines and exciting adventures. Capaldi's a very intense actor and I'm confident that he will restore some of the much loved terror and thrill to the show. I just hope he's given that chance by the head writer.

I do worry that Moffat insists on including comedy routines such as Strax, who should be a war hardened killer Sontaran, but is now a bumbling Victorian butler, and irrelevant routines such as Silurian Vastra and Jenny's lesbian marriage. That makes me want to throw up. Get rid of that shit now.

So I'd say 50/50 on the first episode. But perhaps going forward, the writer who once created two of the most terrifying and exciting adventures I've ever seen (The Empty Child - "are you my mummy?" and Blink - "don't blink!") has gone stale and has become obsessed with irrelevant shit that could ruin a show. Perhaps it is time he moved on - and then maybe the good vs evil stories that we crave will fully return.

PS - at least there was no fucking red lobster under a dress this time - unlike a previous show that was set in Victorian London.

Some good signs last night, although it was stupidly long and Moff's tired act remains tired. OTOH, Jenna was channelling Liz Sladen at times (in a good way), and Capaldi has what it takes.
