The Hunt for Red October, on Film 4 now.

Sean Connery Sam Neil and Tim Curry as Soviet submariners, a pretty charisma-free Alec Baldwin as the "hero", quite expositiony and wordy for a Hollywood film, hardly any "action" to speak of in the car-chasing-running-about-shooting-at-people sense of the word....just lots of people standing shouting "20 degree angle on the bow plane" and "Con! Sonar!"...and really a complete lack of suspense in terms of the ending as we already know that the Soviet Union didn't launch a surprise nuclear attack on the US from an undetectable submarine in the mid 80s : so the fun is not so much in finding out what's going to happen but in following the twists and turns it plays out towards a reasonably foreseeable ending.

It shouldn't really work, but somehow it does.
