So far I can't see any advantages of upgrading to win 10, besides the new start button. But as I already got used to how it is now, It really don't bother me enough to upgrade just for that.

I think I will stay with 8.1 until someone can tell me a good reason to update from 8.1 to 10.
if you like 8.1 then you will like 10 assuming you dont have any issues installing it.
me i just like my privacy and right now its my biggest concern.(in part to the way david cameron seems to think its ok to allow gchq to gather our data without good reason or oversight and the fact m.s seem only to willing to share the data they gather with 3rd parties)
im also pissed that certain apps that are supposedly off aint and there still connecting to outbound ports with no means to block them as windows firewall, seems to allow them even after i setup rules specifically for them.

other than that its pretty, simple to use and supports dx12 natively.
1 thing i would say is as an owner of 8.1 you can add features from win 10 to your current o.s and they seem to work well.

me i think il be back on win 7 this time next month.

That's interest (and disturbing) what you say about secretly open ports in Windows 10. Hopefully there will be a big enough stink about this in social media for MS to reconsider.

Putting aside the privacy issue, from a user experience point of view is it an improvement on Windows 7 and 8? I like the idea of multiple desktops, for instance, something I've used on Macs for years. Also, I've found 8.1 to be a very fast and smooth OS, by far the most stable version of Windows I've used.

Oh I really did. Rolleyes

There is a reason why the majority of people still use windows, and I doubt it's the lack of trying. Most software and games are created on windows.

Indeed there is; it's because it comes pre-installed on the vast majority of PCs sold! Rolleyes

Seriously, though, I got off the MS bandwagon years ago and switched to Linux - it's fantastic, IMO. Smile

Obviously, it's different to Windows, so there's a learning curve (though not as bad as I expected, tbh), and while I wouldn’t pretend it's perfect (what is?), I've no regrets, and wouldn’t consider going back... Smile

I often think that many people give up on Linux simply because it's not Windows! Huh
i would make the jump, i know i have the experience to make it a pretty painless transfer. but its just not well enough supported on the gaming side. nvidia are now putting some effort into linux drivers but there far from perfect.
to may competing distros. to many self styled elitist gurus recomending this 1 over than and if your not using what they consider to be the best they just wont help you. even with the basics. for me the biggest problem with linux is the comunity and thats not a good sign for its growth.

dont get me wrong theres lots of things i like about it. open source is the future IMO but were just not there yet.

Gaming does seem to be a weak area (not a problem for me, though), but I believe strides have been made?

As for too may distros - just stick to one of the main ones, all of which can be run live, for a trial, to see which you prefer - largely, I would suggest, this will likely come down to which desktop environment you prefer.

I'm surprised by your comment about the Linux 'community' - all I can say is that, on the surprisingly rare occasion that I've had a problem that I've not been able to sort out myself, a quick search usually reveals the answer on some distro's forum or other, and if not, a quick post usually does the trick; generally, the 'community' is usually held up as being one of the (many, IMO) good things about Linux.

Most software and games are created on windows.

Games, granted, but other software? There’s certainly a humungous amount of Linux software available; some would suggest as good, and in some cases, better than the Windows' equivalent.

Also, don't forget that Android is just a version of Linux (depending on who you believe!). Rolleyes

Bottom line, If I can use Linux shocked , it can't be that difficult! Rolleyes

But, far be it for me to stop those who enjoy the masochistic, not to mention costly, MS treadmill... Rolleyes Tongue

RE: Free Windows 10 Upgrade
you didnt mention you can make distros like mint into stand alone versions that dont need installing, they work of whats known as a live cd.
well worth trying out if you dont quite wanna jump in all the way.

Just to clarify, you don't need to make them 'into stand alone versions' - you just download the ISO, burn it to CD, DVD or put it on a flash drive, and when booting from it, you choose the option to try/run live, rather than install - easy! Smile Once you've found one you prefer, use the same media you used for the live 'trial' to install the OS on the the HDD - again, easy! It can be put on instead of Windows, or alongside, as a dual-boot system, though the latter isn't as straightforward as it used to be, thanks to MS's 'secure boot' (or something like that - I'm not really 'up' on the latest MS shenanigans Rolleyes !).

This can be removed and linux tried, as was the case with me. You link it fine, your a fanboy, but having tried both windows is a better operating system.

But this thread is about windows 10, not linux.

Open another thread in tech and tell in detail there why it's so wonderfull.
