RE: Free Windows 10 Upgrade
Right I've gone and done it - upgraded from 8.1 to 10. It was simple to do and I've found that 10 is a big improvement on the ghastly windows 8. Good riddance to that.

I'm keeping my windows 7 computer because I haven't got any problems with it and comparing it to windows 10 I don't see any advantage in making the upgrade.

I've also gone and done it. My PC had Windows 8 pre-installed, then upgraded to 8.1 and then to 10.

The PC has a recovery partition. So if I now make a recovery drive the version of Windows in the recovery drive is 8 and not 10?

So how do I make a recovery drive for Windows 10?

When you first move over to windows 10 it keeps windows old. If you want to revert go in to settings update and secruity, there you will find recovery there it will allow you to role back using the windows old (this deletes after 30 days).

If you are happy with windows 10, you will need to make a system image to an external hdd same as in windows 7.

Which is in the same place but under back up.

Don't make a recovery drive from the recovery partition. Search in Windows 10 for Create a recovery drive and do it that way.

Yes it was the right thing to do though, because windows 8 was an abomination. Good riddance to it.

I see that some kind of mega update is available as of today, although I haven't received it myself yet.

Upgrading to Windows 10
Was wondering if anyone has upgraded to Windows 10 yet...

I have a laptop running Windows 7. For the past few months, I have been been regularly prompted to upgrade to Windows 10.

As I use my laptop for business, I'd be very grateful to know:-
  • Is Microsoft planning to force users to upgrade? Tried looking this up on the Internet, but couldn't find a clear answer?
  • Has anyone upgraded to Windows 10? Did your programs run as before?

Any advice much appreciated.

Happy New Year to all.

RE: Free Windows 10 Upgrade
yes, some of us upgraded to 10 in the first days of release.
did it go smoothly?
yes! for the most part. my only gripe was the time it took to do the upgrade. over 5 hours.

as for sticking or moving. i would stay with 7 if you dont need the upgrade and remove the nagware that microsoft keep adding to there updates.
to remove the constant reminder to upgrade. open your installed updates and remove

KB3035583.
KB3021917
KB3022345

you also need to disable two tasks in Task Scheduler.

There are two tasks under TaskScheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience, "Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" and "ProgramDataUpdater", that will continue to contact telemetry servers even if telemetry is disabled. These tasks run and phone home even if CEIP is opted-out of.

RE: Free Windows 10 Upgrade
I'd recommend to anyone thinking of downloading it, don't. If you can stay on Windows 7, I'd advise you to do so.

I was fed up with the several hour download time, but it wasn't just that. For about 4 or 5 days after download it seemed fine. Although I had an issue too with it trying to find my home internet network, it eventually found it and I was impressed at first with the speed.

It was only after say a week or two I noticed things loading even slower than with Windows 7. I stuck with it for another few weeks but after getting frustrated with the network settings suddenly becoming non-compatible, then not being able to find the router altogether, and then the error messages on start up and shut down repeatedly claiming unresolved setting differences are preventing internet connection, it was causing some stress, all that was the last straw. I was relieved I was still able to restore to Windows 7.

I still get the reminders to go back on to Windows 10 so I'll try the steps listed by HEX!T to resolve it, although since going back to Windows 7 I've been happier and I can keep ignoring the Windows 10 stuff if need be.
