Batman(1989)
Tim Burton's Gothic masterpiece, split opinion on release.Snooty critics whose only memory of Batman was the Adam West TV series(which represented the comic at the time)had not even glanced at Frank Miller's breakthrough comic,The Dark Knight Returns, which the tone of the film was based on.It was exactly what creator Bob Kane had always wanted to see and remained most faithful to his original vision until Batman Begins came along.Michael Keaton was also attacked for being mostly known for his comic turns. The actor captured the tortured Bruce Wayne perfectly.Steeped in the 80s with its corrupt cops, greedy politicians and featuring an insanely, over the top performance from Jack Nicholson as the Joker.Fans didn't care about the deviation from the comic origin story when they saw production designer Anton Furst's vision of Gotham City brought to life with Danny Elfman's broody score.

London After Midnight(1927)
A mystery film from Tod Browning where the vampires are the red herrings used to trap the real culprits responsible for a series of murders. One of the most sought after "lost films" mainly because of Lon Chaney's extraordinary make up.The film was remade by the same director in 1935 as Mark Of the Vampire, with Lon Chaney as the vampire.

Accion Mutante(1993)
Spain's attempt at the cyberpunk genre with this comical slice of sci fi,which owes some of its satire to the junk television infomercials that screen throughout Robocop.Every bit as postmodern as Paul Verhoeven's classic, this thoroughly bizzare blood and violence epic is well worth tracking down.
