I never think that it's a good idea to award a sportperson whilst they are still competing.

Agree wholeheartedly with Charlemagne. I think the awards are handed out so often that the thing almost becomes meaningless.

They're handed out like confetti every year, to celebrities from all persuasion of expertise, and for me it devalues the whole concept of the award. I want to make it clear that I'm not in any way dismissing Andy's achievements - what he's achieved this year is excellent. No problem with his achievements.

But to hand out knighthoods whilst the bloke is still competing, and effectively doing his job, is the wrong play. For me it's not what a knighthood should be about.

I have long since thought the honours system is all wrong.
Essentially celebs/sports people are being honoured by the state at least in large part for doing their job to a very high standard which I believe is wrong. Lots of people in the country do their job to an incredible standard but too many of them do not get the same recognition as they are not in the public eye. If the argument is that they inspire then once again I would say they are in a better position to do so because they are in the public eye. The ordinary Joe Bloggs factory worker is not going to get the same public attention as a well known actor/actress, singer or sportsperson so has limited capacity to inspire a larger proportion of the population. I have long since been of the view that honours are dished out willy nilly. I appreciate that a lot of honours go to people outside of the celebrity sphere for things like charity work which I think is fair enough.
But overall I don't agree with the honours being dished out like confetti to celebs every year.

I also agree; but makes you wonder who Beckham upset to also not have made the grade as yet? He's been retired a couple of years already....

The fact that actors get knighted mid career is different, as they tend to work well into old age, if not until the day they die; whereas handing out knighthoods/dameships to people still in their twenties is just ludicrous..? Isn't it?

I also agree with the above and what Snookered said about Beckham why hasn't he been knighted? I agree too that awards are dished out willy nilly too much and often who are given to the wrong people and I think if sports people and singers actors inspire people then fine but ordinary people who often do extraordinary things that are not reported about should also be honoured in some way
even if it is done discreetly

Yep agree Andy Murray should get the honour but after his career has completed, he has won things as a british player that no briton has since Fred Perry and in a much more competitive era.

Murray got it because he deserved it, bottom line.
Yeah Beckham should have gotten one for winning absolutely fuck all throughout his whole England career, and then fucking off to the USA to avoid paying tax...
