Point of order - we DID hold the referendum during Obama's presidency
'Special relationship' or not, the US needs the UK, we are their goto guys for things like intelligence that can't be legally gathered by themselves, taking away our data would leave them compromised, at least for a while, not to mention things like the military bases here, and the support we provide when they want to go bombing or invading someplace. It's in their interests to keep us on the sweet side with a trade deal, to keep all the other 'deals' running smoothly, so May should bear that in mind, and not go bending over backwards to accept whatever piss poor deal Trump may put on the table at the first offering.
Trumps USA also needs to be seen to be doing a deal with someone, not just attacking other nations, and banging the drum, and talking the talk, they need to be seen to have friends. It's all well and good Trump giving his speeches, but if everyone starts turning their backs on him, he'll soon become isolated, and his dream will be seen to be just empty talk, he needs someone on his side, and who better than old faithful UK.

There is some wall there already, started in 2006 under Bush's admin and FINISHED AND MAINTAINED under Obama, so those two presidents must have thought there was a need for one, or at least partial one.
This trump is only trying to extend it, even though it is impracticle

Obama couldn't invade Syria because Britian voted against it and was even more pissed off with Britian, US needs friends as well, he will probably learn a lot in the first few months.
Obama made the mistake of thinking Britian was no longer relevant
