You can't even get a good bag of chips now because a tiny minority of the country has demanded chips cannot be fried in beef fat; is that another subject?

We agree on Capaldi being a great doctor and should be staying longer.

I was against the change of gender at first, but I've had a change of heart. If the Master, who has always previously been a male, can be a female, there's no reason why his counterpart cannot be either. I don't think it would be 50 years of history wiped away - the Mistress (or Missy for short) has referenced her past before so presumably the Doctor would too. Michelle Gomez has been brilliant in that role as the Master and since I've seen how well that has worked, I'm for the change if it's the right person.

Maybe It needs a big change like that to shake the series up again. People have already mentioned in this thread recently that the show is on a downer and coming to an end. Well we need something to change that.

Male or female, if they're a good actor or actress, then no reason why not in my opinion. I look forward to seeing who they choose.

Anyway, if it doesn't work, they can always change it back again in another few years.

Nobody gave a second thought about the doctor being male when I was a kid, he was male and that was that.

Michelle Gomez is good but there wa sno real reason to change the sex of the Master, he was always known as the Master not Mistress.

They tried ramping up the female companions to be more s a s s y (keeps changing this word to sexy, odd), made the male ones more like drips, made the master into the mistress, captain jack a bisexual homosexual, the recuring lesbian lizard woman (eh).

The majority of people have no problem with the doctor being forever male.

Besides, they would have to change the name of the show to Nurse Who...

^ I think the beeb would love to have a female Doc but that it would be considered too radical a change at this stage. The series being in a somewhat rocky patch makes taking such a risk right now (Tony Hall claimed the role hadn't been cast only a week or two ago but the choice is obviously imminent if not already made by now) - for a huge cashcow show like this - quite significant.

The instigation of a female Doctor is always going to be a tricky affair to pull off of course and I suspect when it happens (if the series survives longterm it's almost inevitable I think) it'll likely be with some sort of safety net built into the writing. This way a female Doc could be quickly recast again, and delivered as some sort of in between regens Doc (a la The War Doctor) after half a dozen episodes say, if the option doesn't take with the public.

Any 'consumer resistance' would be lessened by such a move, even if initially unsuccessful. Fans tend to take to even the initially unpopular parts of a show over time and such circumstances would allow a second female Doctor in more easily later on

The casting of a black actor as the Doctor on the other hand has the added bonus of broadening appeal with very little downside and, to me, seems far more likely than a female Doc following on from Capaldi.

The striving to appeal to new young viewers again has, as Regens says, been quite marked in recent years. The rumour mill, as I mentioned up thread, has the beeb wanting a return to the family-friendly pulling power of the Tennant era. That suggests a 'safer' pair of hands in the choice of new Doc and a reinstigation of familarity rather than the radical for now.

More immediately, the Radio Times today reports that the first episode of series 10 - The Pilot - is a quite deliberate choice in that it offers a fresh starting off point for new viewers. So there's going to be some restatement of ideas going on for a while I feel too. Nearly all the most popular monsters are lined up to show this series note.

How's everyone feel about a reboot then?!

I don't think the series considers chips as important now as RTD thought they should be.
