From Beyond(1986)

Stuart Gordon's good follow up to Re-Animator which has only just been released uncut features the director's trademark Lovecraftian body horror and gore. With good performances from scream queen Barbara Compton and Ted Sorel in the lead roles.

7/10

Lifeboat (1944) During World War Two,survivors from a ship sunk by a U Boat find themselves on a lifeboat with a U Boat crew member. A Hitchcock directed piece which is compelling despite being set entirely on the lifeboat, with intelligent, interesting, sometimes witty dialogue. The characterisation is strong, covering the worst and best in human behaviour, and there are nods in the script, characterisation and storyline to the Nazi regime and the war situation. Strong acting throughout, including Tallulah Bankhead,John Hodiak,Hume Cronyn,Canada Lee,William Bendix,Henry Hull,Walter Slezak and Mary Anderson. An underrated classic,I reckon. 8/10

Alien Covenant - People still doing stupid things (Running in the direction a spaceship is crashing - re Promethius) and the trailer gave away far too much and oh that's where they are going with this REALLY!!!!!

Shame Neill Blomkamp's vision will probably never happened now as that would have been much better.

Might go and see WonderWoman this week.

Predestination(2014) The story of a 'temporal agent' played by Ethan Hawke who travels through time to prevent crimes. A film that sets itself nicely in the first half or so helped by a typically good performance from Hawke and a remarkable one from Sarah Snook. The back end of the film, however, is less than satisfactory, although clever, is rather confusing with a rather flat ending. Also starring Noah Taylor. 6.5/10

Lights Out (2016).

A horror film produced by James Wan of whom I'm a big fan of who has produced/ directed horror films such as the early Saw films,Dead Silence,Insidious 1-4, The Conjuring 1&2,Annabelle & non-horrors Fast & Furious 7 & the upcoming DC Film Aquaman.
Lights Outs focuses on the main character Rebecca (played by the rather hot Teresa Palmer)whom moved out of her family home to escape her traumatic childhood & rather loopy mother (played by Maria Bello).A few years later Rebecca is re-united with her family due to a family tragedy in which she bonds with her younger brother whom she thinks would be better off in her care than their mothers.
It is then the family become terrorised by a vengeful entity that can only move & survive in the dark & the shadows (& whom hates the light basically). The entity has strong links to certain family members past. What happens next? you'll have to watch for yourself (its on Sky Premiere for the week).

All in all a good film worth watching particularly if your familiar with James Wan's previous work. 7.5/10.

5 Card Stud(1968) A supposed cheat at a poker game is lynched, and then one by one the poker players begin to get murdered. An unusual mix, as there is quite a high body count, and though there are dark moments, and it is a fairly light hearted affair. Indeed, the well written often witty script bolsters the thin mystery element and storyline. Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum(as a preacher and looking rather like he did in the classic Night Of The Hunter)breeze through their roles, while Roddy McDowall provides some cynicism. Also starring Inger Stevens, Katherine Justice,John Anderson, Ruth Springford, Yaphet Kotto & Denver Pyle. 6.5/10

Fortress(1992)

Stuart Gordon cast Christopher Lambert at the height of his brief leading man period as an inmate of a prison, who leads a violent revolution against his captors.A futuristic, fast paced and well made sci-fi actioner that spawned a straight to DVD sequel in 2000.

6.5/10

Deadly Intent(2016) In the wake of her soldier husband's death, a widow(Rebecca Reeney) and her young son(Gus Barry) experience what appear to be supernatural happenings. An uneasy mix of drama and horror not helped by a humdrum script. Its slightly frustrating, as it appears there's a decent film about dealing with grief trying to get out. The acting is fine, especially Reeney and Peter Lloyd as her late husband. Also starring Lara Lemon. 5/10
