Not so much a fascinating fact but more of an enigma-why is it that the word abbrieviation is so long for a description of words that are so short?

Not sure there is one, etcetera (latin in origin I think) usually means 'and so on' or 'so forth'

The reason the word is longer than the abbreviation is so you can tell them apart. In fact, the word was specifically designed for that very purpose, and when you think about it, that sort of makes sense, doesn't it? Just think if the word were "abb" and you abbreviated it with "abbreviation." Do you think you would ever finish whatever it is you were writing? So they worked it out the way it is, which is a whole lot more efficient, and lets you get a lot more things done in life. It makes sense, but even if it doesn't, you should memorize it. You don't want to get this one wrong
