Things you could do once, but can't now

Okay now this thread will either live or die by the number of posts but I thought about this earlier. This is about things that you used to be able to do, but for some reason, now you can't...and oh yes, keep it clean

I'll start you off so you can see what I meant.

In the early seventies as a child my Dad and I were able to walk down Downing Street as it was a public road-since the attack years later by the IRA(using a mortar fired from a parked van) this stopped and now because of the gates and security there NO-ONE can just walk down it(in an episode of The Persuaders, Danny and Lord Sinclair(Tony Curtis & Roger Moore) can be seen walking out of that street(arm in arm).

So now you see where I am going-what do you remember being able to do back then, but you can't do now. Good posting.

One that I mentioned in the ‘Memories of Childhood’ thread but this definitely applies to this thread as well.

Being able to buy fireworks at the age of 9, no questions asked.

Do it now, and it’s like trying to buy cocaine..last time I bought them I had a bloody escort to the door of the shop I’d bought them from!

And in the pub...guilty as charged. Was it a coincidence that once the smoking ban came in, the pub trade collapsed? Me think not, all that crap about ‘all the non smokers would come flooding back’...never happened.

Before the smoking ban there were 6 pubs in the village where I grew up. As of today all but one have closed down.

I also walked up to the doors of Downing St and had a photo taken.

And I've walked in and around Stonehenge, which you can't do any more. You can only walk round the perimeter.

Going back even further. During the 1930's my Grandad parked his car in the middle of the stones, where he had a picnic

Very true Charle you cannot go near the stones. I remember we could sit or climb about on the ground ones. The only way you can get near the stones now is if you are a bonafide Druid and go there for the Summer Solstice.

Looking at the state of it now and compare it to pre 2007 and yes I’d say so. It’s estimated that 7,000 pubs closed down between 2007 and 2015 alone.
