Music On TV - Documentaries/Live Performances

A bit late but if you're into 70's rock by the likes of Graham Parker, Kursaal Flyers, The Motors, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Elvis Costello etc a programme on late last night called "Totally British: 70's rock and roll" is well worth watching on catch up. Just watching it now including some bands that are new to me. Mostly clips from "Old Grey Whistle Test". Was on BBC 4

I smiled at Thursday night's one where the "breakers" were Fields of the Nephilim, Sabrina and James Brown - possibly about as dissimilar a run of 3 acts as you could do, and nothing you would get nowadays.

And of course Friday - starting with Sabrina and ending (almost) with Doctorin the TARDIS, so probably my fave ever episode

Was sabrina in the studio on Fri i missed half of it dont know why that performance of her in that denim top with the zip which was falling down dont know why thay would be memorable to a 14 year old me

Wasnt a fan of Doctor in the tardis prefer it when they became the KLF

Should be repeated BBC4 tonight probably. Or on YT along with dozens of other versions of her singing Boys on shows around Europe.

Sky Arts have a doc on Suzi Quatro tomorrow night.

BBC4 had ones on Janet Jackson and Joan Armatrading tonight (later tonight if you missed them in peak time viewing).

Still not got to the Quatro one

Janet one had some surprises (her early acting and unsuccessful early albums).

Joan one pretty solid - I had the impression she broke through on New Faces or something, but seemingly not

There was another good one on Betty Davis, who married Miles, but was a funk stormtrooper all by herself. But she went into self-imposed exile after her father died if I understood it correctly.

Still on the "Black History Month" vibes were a BBC4 effort on Studio 17, the Kingston home of Randy's Records, which did much for the likes of Carl Malcolm, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Lord Creator (and ultimately, UB40). Also an oddity about the UK genre of Lovers Rock, with Janet Kay, Maxi Priest and Sylvia Tella (and UB40, to be honest). I wonder if the next decade will finally see the BBC start up 2extra, the natural blend of 1extra and Radio 2.

Had forgotten about Jane Weidlin, thank you TOTP.

Wish I could forget Nicky Campbell and Gary Davies though - every silver lining has a cloud.

(My God, had also forgotten how tedious I found bloody plastic Yazz being in the charts for so long with that bloody Only Way Is Up song.)
