Finally some good news!

So, Boris's first briefing back and he gets to announce we're past the peak.
What a coincidence. I wonder how long they've been sitting on that...

And what wtf did he mean when he said we were past the peak for the first time but said we were under the peak? I agree SM, I think they knew we were past the peak for a while, but didn't want to announce it until Boris came back...

There was way too much waffle in his briefing that just made him look like he wasn't communicating straight with the public at large I'd say his performance gave me the impression he wanted to go and see his baby son and was coming incommunicado with us..

Prof Chris Whitty said yesterday eradication of the virus is 'technically impossible' and what is key to keeping virus under control is keeping "the R number below 1"

There is a body of opinion, based on the raw figures and other underlying factors, that the peak was on 8th April, and since then we have been on a gentle downcurve.
Whether they deliberately held back on saying that so Boris could grab the headline, or whether it was just that no-one else had the guts to publicly say it and possibly be held to account on it at a later stage in the event it wasn't accurate, or whether they didn't want to acknowledge it for fear of everyone thinking 'yay, lockdown must be over then', who knows.

Boris's press conference yesterday was the typical fare, lots of hyperbole, grandiose language, plenty of fluff and filler, but ultimately little of real substance. It was more distraction than showing real leadership. Very typical of the way this whole thing has been handled from the beginning.

At the centre for disease control and prevention in South Korea. Researchers are saying it is impossible to catch the COVID-19 virus twice.

Now that the daily testing has "ramped up" it will be interesting to see in a few days how the number of new cases change, when the results for those tests come back.



so far 117,000 cases out of 1,023,000 tests works out at 17% positive.

If that was to be the case for today's announced 122,000 tests, then there would be 21,000 new cases. It won't take us long to get to second on the world list at that rate.
