History has a way of repeating itself especially in politics

In 1956 Labour Leader Hugh Gaitskell has the difficult task of opposing Conservative Prime Minister Anthony Eden for his instigation of The Suez Crisis, something that he believed was wrong but (at the start) was largely popular amongst the British public. Eventually Suez came crashing down on Eden & he was forced to resign. Gaitskell has been proven right, surely he would win the next election ? Unfortunately for him The Tories replaced Eden with the current Chancellor of the Exchequer Harold Macmillian who was popular with the public to the point he was dubbed "Supermac" and the Tories won the next election increasing their total number of seats by 20.

In 1968 The United States is beset by a wave of protests largely made of young people opposed to The Vietnam War. After a tumultuous party conference that was stormed by protestors & resulting in violence Democratic Presidential candidate Humphrey moves his party to the left away from President LBJ's hard war stance & adopting a softer approach on foreign policy aligning it more with the hard left & the protesters. But Humphrey mistakes the voice of those loudest in the country with the majority of public opinion, Republican candidate Richard Nixon accuses him of being soft on Communism & siding with the disruption & violence of the protestors. Nixon positions himself as the candidate of stability and "law & order" and uses "The Southern Strategy" to appeal to racist white voters in southern segregationist states. In essence Nixon targets the silent majority and despite only winning 0.7% of the popular vote more than Humphrey, Nixon crushes him at the Electoral College 306 to 191
