RE: General News Thread
I have to say that all this unwelcoming sentiment towards those that are risking their lives to get here to the UK, is depressing = it is so un - British! It should be remembered that a large number (the vast majority i would venture to suggest) are fleeing circumstances not of their making, some of which in fact, are of our making with our 'ventures overseas' which have destabilised their homeland.
No question that some Isis etc misfits have sought (some successfully) to intermingle with the legitimate refugees and have made it across, but that did/does not render those that genuinely need our help, beyond the pale! In actual fact, we are culpable in this respect also, as we could have joined with Germany, and others, when Angela Merkel made the laudable decision to open Germany's arms to those in such need - instead we/and they turned our backs! A greater degree of cross - border cooperation, could have ensured a system was put in place to vet those coming, but that didn't happen, leaving Merkel to be the only one to react to the distressing scenes of the dead body of that little boy on the beach. To see the Home S(ick)retary, at the forefront of this determined plan to keep people from seeking sanctuary is particularly galling, for what i hope are obvious reasons. I am so glad I am an Atheist, for if this is an example of Christian values, you can shove them deep and far!!

Very good take. It is pretty depressing, but even more depressing is that it isn't exactly done without what appears to be substantial public support. There seems to be a lot of people calling for this, and some even arguing it doesn't go far enough. And they call for it, claiming it will help eradicate attacks. I feel like it kind of plays directly into ISIS' hands though.
Their entire recruitment model is based around 'the west hates you, they're your enemy, join us and fight the enemy, etc'. If a western country bombs or invades a majority muslim country, and when escaping their bombs, 'The Most Tolerent Country in Europe™' says 'go fuck yourself'... it's such a gift for this mode of radicalisation.
And before anyone jumps in with 'oMg YoU lOonEy LeFtY lOlZ', no, I don't think the answer is for everyone to hug eachother either. It just needs to be smarter than this.
