Would it wash, if in pursuing this chase anything come what may mindset, the Ashes were lost?? It shouldn't matter if the philosophy is deemed the right one, but I have this niggling doubt in my mind.

It was mentioned only the other day on radio, but many seem to have forgotten, after England failed to reach to latter stages of the 2015 World Cup, Morgan revolutionized the way the ODI side played, but we played a 2 match Test Series against the Kiwi's in which Baz captained, but we had many one day players, & it was very similar to this series.
Vaughan believes that even the Aussie bowlers wont like it if we take the attack to them, but still thinks that they'll come out on top.
I do understand that just surviving, & not scoring is a worse option, but there has to be a middle ground.

You can see some of the 50over and T20 team being brought into the test team.

Absolutely there does!! Not every pitch (despite - much to my frustration - more and more becoming like it) will be a relatively benign surface. Hopefully there will still be the tracks where long innings, and the concentration, and technique required to build them, even in a chase scenario, will be the required approach. I wonder though, will England have the ability to switch gears?? Some may say that it would merely be 'returning to type' but it isn't as simple as that as we all know. Personnel may have to change too, despite 'consistency' that is now the 'watch word'.

^^ I'd say the very best can, & will adapt. remember Stokes Ashes wining century at Headingley. He soaked up pressure, the evening before, hardly scoring, before he went into top year later in the following day. AB de Villiers was slaying bowlers in ODI & T20 cricket, yet blocked it out for hours on a turning wicket against India. What both players have in common is a sound & trusted defensive technique. At present Crawley has no such game to fall back on. He got the backing by Baz today, who focused on the positives, but he suggested that he would fail more than succeed, but was capable of match winning knocks. I'm not sure that England, or any Test side can accommodate a player of this nature, at the top of the order.
