A lot of stories on the grapevine about the HS2 works. The main problem with the cost seems to lack of competent oversight by the people in charge. Or who should have been in charge.

Seems to have mostly been the tail wagging the dog.

Contractors being told what the budget was before tendering allowed them to tender up to the hilt of the budget, instead of their best price for the job.
Massive amounts of wasted time and materials on the site.
Sub-contractors brought in and being told to slow down, they were working too fast.
etc, etc.

The guy in charge of HS1, which came in on time and under budget (or it might've been ahead of time and on budget, I can't remember) applied for the HS2 job and was turned down because of lack of experience

well god knows how many Transport Sectaries in the number of years doesn't help
