RE: 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup (50 over version)
Well FINALLY, we can say England are out! Another pretty average display from them today again, and after the Aussies kept them in it with a target much lower than it should have been! What was the game plan followed - in particular by Green, Stoinis and Cummins?? ridiculous shot selection at the point their innings was at
In return, while Australia fielded like demons (dropped catches apart), England yet again showed they have not got the first idea how to manage a chase (or a set - up in this WC come to think of it) Stokes, Buttler (again) Ali?? Really??
Next time around, with 14 teams (two short), England, or whoever, will have - if the format is 2 x 7 groups - 'only' 6 ties, should the same level of performance be repeated to progress, and maybe 3 defeats will see any team gone! Still too many, but marginally better than the 'rotting corpse' stinking the place out for as long as the 7 losses this comp!

RE: 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup (50 over version)
The domestic structure will be likely to change. The 50 over comp is full of 2nd XI players, the best of these will progress to 1st team Championship and the Hundred, so unless they gain ODI honours their 50 over development stops, this is what happened to Brook, and was used as a reason/excuse to initially omit him from the WC squad despite being one of our best young talents. what has happened since 2019 is this aging group have been busy mainly playing T20 and Tests and lost the rhythm of 50 over cricket.
No need for a planned clear-out as a reaction to this abject performance, this will happen naturally, they were dubbed Dads Army going into this event, all of yesterday's XI will be approaching 40 come the next WC. I expect that squad to resemble the one that play Ireland, although I reserve my judgment on Crawley as a captain. Hard to see Mott and Buttler leading this group in 4 years.
Root suggested that a return to a top tier domestic 50 over comp at the expense of the Blast could be an option. Without that change England need to start building an ODI squad right now as there will be limited ODI fixtures between now and the next WC.
Our administrators had some belief years ago that the International 50 over format would be the one to go, leaving Tests and T20, that was a driver in our domestic 50 over downgrade. In reality the explosion of T20 francize comps has shrunk the calendar to breaking point. India, Australia and England are playing 70% of all Test cricket, for the rest it is too expensive to put on. Unless the ICC can fund all nations, Test cricket will decline further, the WTC isn't working.
Despite what the ECB thought the ICC must see an appetite for ODI cricket, it's going nowhere, with at least the 2027 and 2031 events set in stone.

With this decision, the ICC have got something right for once! The ECB - in turn - were right with the PRO 40 thinking, I believe they could 'persuade other member nations to adopt it and influence the ICC to follow suit and change the WC to the format?? Maybe a compromise?? Matches shortened by approx 2 1/4 hours, more matches included with 16 teams??
Innternational 40 over cricket would be great compromise, the old Sunday League was very popular.
Forget any thoughts about a quicker game, England bowled 20 overs of spin and still missed the cut off, Willey running back to his mark in the 49th, to no avail. Penalized in the last with an extra fielder in the circle, another case of inept captaincy from Buttler.
It's not uncommon for an IPL game to take 4 hours.
