How can they be expected to run the country when they can't even organise the election launch. They have so many indoor options, the literally spent millions on a press briefing room and the send him out in the rain !

Paula Vennils will be glad, he's done her a real solid in terms of media coverage, somewhere Stephen Byers will have a massive erection.

Nope I wouldn't even think I could even vote Labour and if it tuns out it pisses down with rain that day I doubt anyone will even bother either. Trouble is I think Rishi should have done this a year ago to vindicate his leadership, but I think even Truss should have done the same thing, and I think then we probably would have ended up in a situation when no party may have never got overall majority. Which will likely now be the case.

I get the feeling that the kicking the Tories got locally recently may not be even replicated in the General Election and whoever wins would still be in power - but only just. They will not have the Boris sized majority this time. The vote will be so close either way that whoever wins is going to have to do deals with several smaller parties to shore up something of a coalition and it it could even be possible that the Greens or some independents could be the ones who could be key to that scenario. Where I think the the Tories will lose is in seats that were won by Tories last time but MPs are standing down. A Labour victory which I feel is probably no means a ceertainty may or will only come about if they are able to capture those seats very early on.

Should been dealt with same time as the locals. They had the perfect opportunity long enough to call the General Election at the same time & that is where they fucked up big time.

I wonder now how many will use the oppotrunity to spoil ballot papers and howcmuch election fraud will go on.

Reading a column by the FT's Stephen Bush:

The announcement was a surprise to The Tories who are not fully prepared for an election meanwhile Labour & Lib Dems are because the calling of an election is something they can't control so have to be prepared for one at a moments notice.

Apparently organisation at No.10 is so bad that when Sunak did an event at the Excel centre hrs later he was still wearing his rain soaked trousers

Speculation as to why Sunak called it: The cost of compensating the post office & infected blood scandal victims plus plans to raise defence spending to 2.5% of gdp would make the autumn statement look pretty ugly. Hunt had been making noises that the fiscal reality meant that they could not go ahead with the planned 2p cut in NI.

In addition The Reform party showed in the local elections that it is not in a place right now to field candidates across the board & going early prevents them from increasing their ability to do so, Nigel Farage announced this morning he will not be standing, weakening the party that threatens to syphon votes from their right flank

* there is also talk of inflation going back up or at the very least the fact that it is going down slower than expected means that the much speculated interest rate cuts in the second half of the year will not come to fruition

There would also be added political fallout from a painfull budget that did not provide the largely expected 2p cut in NI especially from low tax Trussite back bencherd that may have pushee the letters of no confidence number over the line
