RE: ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 - West Indies & USA
^^ There's been some concern over the quality of the pitches in New York, the word inconsistent springs to mind, quality bowlers will exploit these types of conditions. I don't have any details of the background around pitch preparation, I'm sure that the ICC would've been heavily involved even up to the point of drafting in specialist grounds staff, or at the least overseeing the work of others.
Even in the West Indies the scores have been on the low side, there was talk about power hitters dominating, but that hasn't really transpired. Pitches have offered turn which was expected.
England have got seduced by the pace of Wood, Archer & Jordan, who wasn't even in the running for a squad place until injuries occurred, Jamie Overton in particular. Pace on the ball gave Australia a flyer. At least some left-arm variety with Topley or Sam Curran who was the man of the tournament a little over a year ago. I do wonder if a medium pace skill bowler such as Benny Howell would have suited these pitches, he was on the radar a few years back but perhaps his time has come & gone.

I think a lot of the issues are down to the pitch having being grown 1,000 miles away in Florida (I believe that is the case) and then it is transported via road (and is a "drop in" type pitch), I would wager there is probably has been a lot of transportation damage that the pitch has gone through before it was put in place, and I think probably the pitch hasn't had enough time to 'bed in' properly, and therefore if there are issues that still are below the surface, they have only just started coming to the fore.
The groundsman in NY is one who has worked at Adelaide Oval and I feel he has his work cut out to remedy things. It will be interesting to see if Pakistan & Canada make any comments afterwards, and I would think Pakistan may have plenty to say. some of thr Ireland team weren't happy as well.
I have to say that today's PAK V CAN fixture could be key to see if they have managed to put things right with it, otherwise I would now wonder if there are any contingency plans in place to move the remaining NY fixtures to other venues if there are more problems with it today.
When you think it, about you probably could say it still wouldn't be a fair and honest pitch in NY either if they had used a mat pitch and you'd probably still would get scores that reflected the level of the surface used and wouldn't be right for the competition, and most likely wouldn't be acceptable to most cricket fans. I just wonder once the World Cup is over just how well used the venue would be (if it was to become a permanent venue), and whether the Major League cricket could really take off on the profile the US organisers have hoped for and most likely would be a shame.
