The Bottom Line
Steve Clemons talks to Daniel Kurtzer about the "new normal" in the Middle East, and then to Richard Medhurst and Dima Khalidi about repression of free speech (in his case, being arrested on orders of the UK govt).

How child labour laws tended to omit canal life, until social reformers put health & safety on the agenda.

Never say die, writ large. It's inevitable with canal series that they mention the fact of Birmingham having more miles of canals than Venice, and also that they visit Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and Liz manages both tricks before signing off. I see Stuart Woodman worked on this series, given he later worked on Canal Boat Diaries too.

Overall a decent enough series.

Odd scheduling since she too is a North-Westerner looking for Irish links. But her story turns towards social reforming and the Irish famine.

Some grim stories here, and not just in supporting Aston Villa. I was a bit bemused at how many words seemed unfamiliar to her, but in all seriousness, if most of us had to look at live translation whilst trying to follow what one person was telling us, we'd go spare.

Global Public Square
FZ talks to former Israeli leader Ehud Olmert, who at least seems interested in a peaceful future for Gaza, and has co-developed a serious new Middle East peace plan with some Palestinians.

The Listening Post
Richard Gizbert gets to do an in-studio interview for once, with Daniel Levy (not that one), about views in Israel.
