Never heard this call before I think.

You have to be eligable to catch or run with ball. It's when one of the big blocker blokes runs onto the field but they are going to use him in another role like running back or as a tight end. Both of who are allowed to be given the ball.

The linemen have different number ranges to running backs etc, so as he runs onto the field he makes the referee aware that he's eligable (he's a replacement).

I agree it is a big loss, but I'd say anything longer than 6 weeks out, then I woul think it's still likely they will not risk playing him again until the playoffs. I also agree they aren't a one man team, I think if Mahomes was to get injured it probably would be a fairly big hit on their aspirations for the season.
