RE: Liverpool FC
The thing with Liverpool supporters over the years is that they've regressed from being overfed on success for so long to being starved of the one true barometer of quality, ie the Premiership for so long that they're now becoming the laughing stock of the English game.
Only those well over thirty years old can truly remember and appreciate what it felt like to win the League; those who are now in their twenties may remember the late 1980s/early 1990s but were probably too young to truly appreciate it.
This has left many LFC fans of today, who have only their fathers and elders to tell them of the club's glory days, looking ever-more desperate and disillusioned. They blame the media, pro-Man United referees and everyone/thing else when really they should just be looking much closer to home.
LFC showed a massive lack of foresight when stadia were being rebuilt on the recommendations of the Taylor Report post Hillsborough, and have been left lagging miles behind their rivals in terms of revenue generated; they couldn't even fill their rather small ground for the recent visit of Bolton (35,000).
Liverpool fans are now perceived as extraordinary whingers, prefering to phone radio phone-ins rather than go to matches, and their domination of said shows only leaves them looking all the more ridiculous in the eyes of rival fans. Whenever they win a throw-in their fans collectively shout "It's our year!" but now the time has come when surely even the most deluded set of fans in England have to stop taking leave of their senses.
The appointment of "King" Kenny had most people at work jumping for joy - all the Liverpool fans, and most of the United fans, who recalled how he quit last time out.
The game has changed so much since he last managed; he didn't even cover himself in glory at Parkhead in that annual two-horse-race, so what kind of warped logic decrees that he's some sort of messiah?
Think Shearer taking the Geordies down and Maradona outthought by proper coaches at the World Cup; it's not all about playing for a legend, else the game's best players would make the best managers.
That old Chinese proverb comes to mind regards Dalglish's appointment and the Kop's reaction - be careful what you wish for...
