Discipline

Over his career, Scholes has received 86 yellow and 4 red cards in the Premier League, making him the fourth most booked player in Premier League history He also been booked 26 times in the Champions League, more than any other player in the competition. Scholes' tackling has drawn criticism from figures in the game such as Arsene Wenger who stated "for me he was not a fair player. There’s a little bit of a darker side in him, sometimes, that I did not like. I respect him highly as a quality player but I did not like some things he did on the football pitch".

malicious fan must have missed the link for the Zidane quotes about Stevie Gerrard which i posted. Must have been coz he was looking for his own Zidane quotes about Scholes which formed that pointless last argument of his. Or maybe he just chose to ignore the link completely, besides, what has Paul Scholes got to do malicious fan, with you thinking Gerrard isnt a world class footballer?? You're moving the goalposts further off field with every post mate. Perhaps you know you were talking tripe in the first place and now you're continuing your argument by taking the subject down sidetracks. From what i can gather, you and your buddy shruteRolleyes are the only 2 on here who doubt Gerrards ability. Says it all really.

Judge me by my size do you? Hmmm? Hmmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the force. And a powerful ally it is.

let me stop you there yoda. i never doubted STEVIE G'S ability, i said he wouldnt get into a world 11 in my opinion ok. you said yesterday your not replying anymore cos you dont have to defend gerrard. so when i told you my world 11 then its just been carried on from there. regarding the scholes quote i read about it recently and yes i had to look it up to see what zidane exactly said. im sure i could find loads of quotes from ex players and what they have said about players playing today, theres a thing called GOOGLE, yoda. like iv said so many times yoda he wouldnt get in my world class 11. and dont call me unbiased towards liverpool cos iv said things about dalglish and keegan amongst others and even said reina in my opinion is the best goalie in the world. so if you dont wanna accept i dont think gerrards WORLD class then dont cos fabregas, xavi, and iniesta would be my three with sneider on the bench with a few more. so if you dont like it, well what can i say. thats all folks....

Why do you keep talking about fantasy world XI's???? Nobody gives a toss about whether he's in your playstation fantasy football team or not. The original argument which you started and are now taking off in another direction was when you said in post 486 of this thread.....

"when you say this kid will be the next stevie g, what are you hoping he achieves? one more title than stevie g got? that would be one then? take this how you want to ok yoda, but if he's such a great player then why hasnt he inspired liverpool to a league title, if he's so good? shearer did it at blackburn with all his goals, with a little help. obviously winky boy at man utd won them the league mostly on his own a few times but i'm sure some united fans would disagree. is gerrard really this special player what people make out he is?

That was your quote which started all this. You clearly questioned Gerrards ability because he has no premier league winners medal. And you've continued the debate by introducing fantasy football teams and footballers from christmas past to prolong the argument. These things have nothing to do with Gerrards ability.

Steven Gerrard is a world class midfielder and has been one of the best in the world at what he does for at least 6-7 years. No proper football fan who is honest with himself will come on here and dispute that because they know that's true. Didnt you say you preferred rugby league over football?? It shows mate....

I'm not getting involved anymore because it's complete bollox.

RE: Football Banter
Loving the banter - this thread at its bestBig Grin! And hey, that's what makes football unique isn't it? We wouldn't be saying all this about cricket would we?laugh

For what it's worth, I think the word special is both overused, and used by different people in different contexts. In my own opinion, I only qualify the word special for those very, very rare players who do something special to me when they get the ball.

In all my years of watching football at Old Trafford, the only United players who have set my heart racing with anticipation and excitement have been Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo - absolute end of!

The likes of Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and numerous others were all world-class footballers, but they just didn't have that almost indefinable ability to make it look like they were so much better than anyone else on the park that they were, by my definition special.

The only opposition players whom I've been lucky enough to see at Old Trafford who - at the time I saw them - had that rarest of abilities have been Diego Maradona, Michel Platini, Romario (in my opinion the best player I have ever seen) Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Separate mentions should go to Robbie Fowler and Thierry Henry, who both in their own ways could cause you some serious damage when in possession. Henry never seemed to do it at Old Trafford, though I do remember Fowler putting in perhaps the most menacing performance I've endured in person in Cantona's comeback match, the 2-2 draw in October 1995.

Others may have very differend interpretations of the word special; but I tend to use such a special word sparingly. Steven Gerrard is a world-class footballer who as Yoda says, would almost certainly find a place in any leading club side (although perhaps the Busquets example is flawed as it takes certain types of players to make up a truly dominant midfield and Gerrard's presence in place of him might possibly cause a case of too many cooks - just my opinion), but I would stop short, by my own definition, of calling him special.

And in reply to the accusations that Paul Scholes is a dirty player, I'd argue that he's just a very poor tackler who happens to play in an area where tackling is an occupational hazard. I could also produce a long list of xxx-rated Gerrard two-footers, especially from his younger days and still cannot believe that he stayed on the field on most of those occasions.

good iv made my point. its not a fantasy 11 its what i see as a world class 11 and how many times yoda he would not be in it, and yes i watch rugby. i watch cricket sometimes, how boring. i love watching the olympics when they are on, i love most sports, is that ok yoda? any fan of any team or any sport can have an opinion, and iv expressed my opinion on your man and i dont rate him as highly as these other players ok. you have an opinion every1 else has one, not every1 thinks gerrard world class, maybe alot of people on this forum do yoda but i dont and theres loads of others who dont, so be a man and get over it.

have your own opinion, lead dont follow.
