The Brit Awards

Just watched the Brit awards,made me realise that i live in my own little world.

There were just three acts worth a listen for me.

First the incredible Adele "Someone like you" she did'nt need any lasers or indoor fireworks/or hundred dancers,and some guy running across the stage on fire(what the fuck was that all about)all she had was a mic and a piano,and she stole the show,the emotion just poured out of her,a true magic performance.

I include Rhianna,even though i could'nt tell if she was miming.

Last but not least Take That,i have never seen them give a bad performance.

The rest meant absolutely nothing to me,i know a lot of you like some of the others,as i said i live in my own little world,i love music anything from Andrea Bocelli to Rock and Pop,ther are only two types of music for me Good and Bad,i know nothing about Indie/Hip Hop/etc etc: just good or bad.

Many years ago the Brits stopped being about a reward for musical talent and became about marketing,they might just as well have record company sales execs come up and collect the awards instead of the artist.
Didn't watch the show as I was at the football,probably just as well as I've only just bought this telly and I don't want to be throwing things at it yet!
I did see the nominations when they were announced and any organization that would even consider cheryl Cole for an award other than mime artist is descending into farce.When you see Mat Cardle nominated for best single when his limp karaoke effort is not even the bset version of that song the lunatics have taken over the assylum.
I would split music differently as stuff you like and stuff you don't, its a personal thing you say you like Take That for example while they make me cringe and reach for a bucket every time I hear them, while Rihanna to me is just bland,overproduced formula pop,but its each to their own.
Just one more beef, why have it presented by James Corden who is about as funny as bubonic plague.

i saw the opening 10 mins or so and found it quite uncomfortable, i dont think this was really aimed at me.
Strange fat man rolling around the stage shouting, introducing some young gentleman, 'fizzy dipstick' or something who came out swaggering away before a fat lass had a bit of a sing song. The some younger man who just looked a bit bedazzled and happy to be there...i just didnt really understand..I turned it over....GOD I FEEL OLD!

The tragedy of popular music is not the music itself, or the acts... but rather the devastating emotional impact the entire scene has on us all as we age.

When we're young (and I mean properly young; tweens to early twenties) we desperately need to grab onto something that will give us social validity, an identity. And we pick and choose from whatever popular music is going around - we only really get to choose from a limited selection of stuff; if your tastes are constantly retro, you run the risk of not being part of a cool crowd.
Then you get a bit older, and if you've not avidly followed the pop scene like a young'un for say four/five years, that's it! End. Lost in a sea of music we neither recognise nor immediately understand, all we can do is reminisce about our youth and the music back then while the world grinds on and on, leaving us feeling ever more irrelevant. I hate that.

I remember when the Brits represented a test of whether or not I'd made the right choices - had I chosen to be a fan of a winner, or a loser?
Pop is terrible simply because it forces us to choose from a limited pallette and then, like any fashion, it's instantly redundant with a very few exceptions. And that's hardly fair.

Missing key events. Talking bollocks. Making stuff up.

I don't see age as being an isuue necessarily, I grew up in age of Black Sabbath, Hendrix and Pink Floyd at their peek,so I'm no youngster, but I still regularly attend music events and gigs. The problem,if it is a problem is that unless you listen to specialist radio stations like Kerrang all you get from the mainstream media is a diet of insipid plastic pop based on image and maximising revenue. I'm not knocking all modern music in a generational attack,even though I may be over 50 I can still enjoy and appreciate bands like Bullet For My Valentine,British Sea Power and so on.There are lots of fresh exciting bands out there but we don't get to see them.
It used to bother me a lot more but these days I quite like being in a so called minority and perhaps we're better of if the music money men stay away and don't try to introduce there mass produced formula music into rock.
One encouarging note, I recently attended a session by Within Temptation, a band who don't get mass exposure in this country, at kerrang radio which was attended by people from my age to teens who had taken the trouble to seek out a better form of music.
It also seems to be a British thing as US and most Euro countries have a much more diverse media when it comes to presenting music.

See i feel the same way about Rap/Urban as you do about Take that,i dont actually own any of there music,i just pointed out that they always give a good performance,i suspect Cheryl Cole was voted in by the public,as i understand some are,others by a panel.

As you say it is a personal thing,maybe even a generation thing,i just dont see some of the so called "Music" around at the moment to be music.

To be honest i only watched the Brits because i knew Adele was performing,the rest i thought was quite dire.

I didn't watch the Brits this year as there was football on Sky. I saw some of the nominations and would've abstained or spoilt my ballot paper if forced to vote.

I absolutely agree that the Brits used to mean something, but now it's all about the marketing and images.

A few months ago when the last-but-one Now album came out I did my usual duty of sifting through the songs and artistes, and suddenly realised it was the moment when I officially became old! Not having listened to any chart stuff - or radio for that matter - for a few weeks, I actually knew none of the artistes and none of the songs! Only when my sister sang a couple of them did I say "Oh yeah, I have heard that one but I didn't know what it was called or who it was by!"

And d'you know what? I was actually proud to have not known anything associated with Now 75 or whatever it was then! In fact, I would've hated for any of my favourite artistes to have been nominated! A recent glance at the Top Ten revealed more versus artistes than an FA Cup draw!

And as a postscript, has anyone noticed that Now have long since dropped the 'that's what I call music'; says it all really doesn't it!

The Brits have definitely lost it.

I remember the day's Britain used to rule the wave's when it came to music. The most successful bands have included Queen, Rolling stones, The Who, The Beatles, Oasis to name but a few. Now don't think for one minute that the industry has dried up, it hasn't it's the idiot's running the show. You will find talent the length and breadth of the country playing for a pitence as the industry seems more content in producing manufactured dross all thanks to shows such as the X-Factor and Britains Got Talent. This is a shame because I've seem many a talented muscian and as one myself I find the industry frustating, I've played in a number of bands and done the pub circuit yet talentless wannabes are having it handed to them on a plate. The Brit Awards what a fucking joke.

couldn't agree more the whole rits thing is the same old same old every year, a reward for selling bland insipid music. Oh for the days when originality and creativity counted for something. I'm quite forunate in that in Birmingham there are loads of small venues where you can see new and unsigned bands and restore your faith in music.

Unfortunately the music scene now is run by men in suits more interested in making money than ion making music and with the connivance of the mass media will continue to pump out the same sound alike formula pop as long as it sells.Chief culprit of course is x- factory with its production line of bland karaoke singers. But when you see the likes of JLS and One Direction nominated for best single it really is hard to find hope. Thank goodnes for the regular slots at the Academy3 where for 5 or 6 quid you get to see 4 or 5 unsigned bands and ofton some real talent on show.

As a side note it annoys me that the 'best international group' category actually seems to be 'best US group category' . no Within Temptation? no Lacuna Coil? no nightwish? I find that bizarre.
