RE: Football Banter
Why are Frank Rijkaard & Jurgen Klinsmann considered 'Big names'???
Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger, David Moyes & Jose Mourinho weren't big names when they took over Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton & Chelsea yet they did & are doing well.
I don't understand this big name thing, the same as Oh we need a big name signing yet no one has ever been linked with Panathinaikos midfielder Lazaros Christodoulopoulos or Rapid Vienna's Jan Johannes Vennegoor of Hesselink

The Villa fans calling Talk Sport all wanted Mark Hughes. Anyway McLeish is now confirmed as the Aston Villa manager. He probably needs a good start to win over the fans, but the fixtures are out today and seem to be reasonably kind in terms of the start Villa have got:
Fulham - Aston Villa
Aston Villa - Blackburn Rovers
Aston Villa - Wolverhampton Wanderers
Everton - Aston Villa
Aston Villa - Newcastle United
Queens Park Rangers - Aston Villa
Aston Villa - Wigan Athletic

There's a pattern here. Rijkaard and Klinsmann were big name players, Benitez, Wenger, Moyes and Mourinho were not. Having said that, they were hardly unknowns to anyone who follows European football (Moyes excepted). Benitez won two Spanish league titles with Valencia, Wenger won stuff with Monaco and brought through a number of the '98 World Cup winners, and The Special One had already won a Champions League with Porto.
It just goes to show that it is extremely rare for a great player to become a great manager (as opposed to just very good).

RE: Football Banter
eagle_si I know Rafa & Jose were known for what they did in Spain & Portugal especially Rafa who broke the Barca, Real two team league but Arsene Wenger wasn't really well known when he came to Arsenal.
As for great players not being good managers, Kenny did alright & he's back again
Looking at the fixtures this season the old cliché is gonna have to be used again, there's no easy games in the Premier League even with the promoted teams although I can't see Swansea being allowed to do what Blackpool did last season & eventhough QPR haven't done any big business yet they will have massive pressure on them every game.
With Stoke being in Europe they may struggle in the following Sunday league game & even with money to spend it doesn't look good at the minute for Newcastle with their best goalscoring midfielder leaving for Championship football (I don't understand this one).
I think these two fixtures not necessarily the result but the games themselves will tell us a lot on how hard & compact the league's gonna be this season.
Stoke v Chelsea
West Brom v Man Utd

I never said that. Read my post again and you'll see.
I had a feeling you or one of the other Reds would mention Kenny Great player? Undoubtedly. Great manager (as opposed to "very good")? Not on his managerial career as a whole. But if he manages to get Liverpool "back on their fucking perch" by ending that 21-year wait for a title, I can reconsider that verdict.
