That's incorrect. The only automatic PIN requirement is for films certified 15 or above being shown during the day. There is no such system in place for the watershed.

My apologies, after looking it seems that our box was set up with the PIN no - this is apparently not the default setting.

Well I wasn't aware you could set up Sky boxes to kick in with a PIN at 21:00. If that's the case and your's was set up like this, then I suppose it was understandable to presume it's the default setting

No apology required, but for a minute there I thought Sky had taken the obvious public protection step and started shipping new Sky boxes with PIN protection turned on by default. The big question is why they dont do this.

Id guess the PIN entry is for babe channels that are allowed to show cert 15 content from 9pm but not before.

FFS can some sane mp not bring this up in the house of commons when the forthcoming debate about the increased remit of ofcom is discussed, any intelligent and reasonable individual would agree that the safety measure's are allready in place for these channels and have been now for many years and SHOULD NOT be subject to regulation in any shape, way or form.

The problem with the PIN system is that it only works on scrambled channels, be they subscription scrambled or "soft scrambled" where even though there's no charge you still have to have a Sky box and card (eg 5*, 5 USA and Pick/Sky 3 etc).

Most of the babechannels are genuine free-to-air and not part of the SKY system (to find out which, take your card out of the box) - I know 900 & 901 used to be "scrambled" but most of the others would work.

I don't know how much SKY would charge to soft scramble, but it would be an ideal solution whereby a default setting would need a PIN to view the babechannels.

Or better still all the adult channels on the SKY EPG simply disappear and the only way to have them switched on is by phoning SKY yourself to activate them onto your system. I know phoning to get the porn on your TV could be just a bit embarrassing for some people but once the phone call is made you can then simply sit back and enjoy the shows without the interference of ofcom as I would say because of this extra safety measure in place they would be deemed surplus to requirements or option 2 use the 4 digit pin code but instead of having one for all, make the Adult Section an entirely separate pin requirement. The babe channels could be left out of the EPG out of default and to activate them it could be as simple as putting in a separate pin number, surely some kind of solution to this problem could be thrashed out to suit all parties. Technology these days now has this all in place to make this possible. Ofcom's remit should only be to regulate the other channels outside of this sector. We are at the early part of a new decade and I've yet to see any significant change towards changing rules and regulations that are more fitting to the present day other than the last century when we simply didn't have this technology available.

Sounds quite plausible and hopeful.

But if there was a default pin setting or free encryption setting or phone to activate etc., in all honesty wouldnt the number of users radically drop? And wouldnt the babechannels get hurt in revenues even more so than from the current drop in content?

I think so much of their business comes from channel hopping, then gradually developing a taste for a little something something. Not sure if this will work.

I suspect the channels are still viable at the moment with the degree of content allowed, and I dont think the regulations can get much worse in the future. I think they will probably develop parallel content even more so (BS extreme I suppose, internet). If they would do so with a free pin I'd be very happy.

It's a good idea, I just don't think Sky would give that much of a crap about these kinds of channels, to have such a system in place.

That's a moot point, iamthatjack, and one that applies to everyone out there that could activily change the current situation. Outside of those people that actually watch these channels, no one gives a flying fuck about them. I'm sure there's millions that don't even know of their existents.

Why all of a sudden am i being asked to input my pin number on the babe channels at night never had that before im on sky. How do i sort this out.
