One of the biggest problems we have is a lack of clarity we think because we are Liverpool we have a right to be on top. Yet we lost this because our former owners moores and parry, hicks n gillette squandered millions on average players that no one else wanted like Lucas. Until we aim for the stars again we will always be stuck in a rut. We have made some decent purchases this summer we have to give kenny time to prove himself. But the warning signs showed themselves again yesterday in the 2nd have the likes of Lucas went missing and we were 2nd best and could have lost.

Yes this is a thread for an opinion of which you gave & being a Liverpool fan I responded to as I didn't agree with it. Seriously people chill the fuck out.

I'll agree with this, I don't see why most fans are gutted when come November they start to realise we won't be challenging for the Premier League this year. What did they expect we have never challenged for the Premier League... Ever!!!

geeman73 Much agreed on some of what you said albeit you did contradict yourself when saying, "and it is about time we spent money on proven talent instead of wasting money like Raffa did on "potential"" Errr Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson & Charlie Adam although I think we bought Adam for his passing & not much else.

Personally I don't see us being any different to most seasons, I think due to not being in Europe & if Kenny plays a mix of youngsters & players who aren't playing regularly in the cups then we should be good for the top 4 but if we were in Eurpoe this season then I think it would be more of the same with us having a fight for 4th place only.

We've got too many central midfielders to be playing 4-4-2, we should be playing 4-3-3 as with the squad we have that would be the perfect formation but for me the purchase of Andy Carroll means this will never happen & I still think Kenny is still too old school on the formations.
It looks to me like he said to himself, right 4-4-2 it is lets buy Andy Carroll without too much thought to the rest of the team. I'm not buying into Carroll, his style puts too much one dimensional thought into players minds & they result to lumping the ball upto him & bypassing midfield players like Meireles & Gerrard.

I only saw the first 20 or so minutes of the Sunderland game & didn't see MOTD so I don't know how the game went but I thought a 1-1 draw maybe what we would get, but with the Arsenal, Chelsea & at the minute UTD results (Although with 15min left they'll nodoubt win 1-2) a 1-1 draw doesn't look too bad. Although we normally draw 1-1 I think the way Arsenal are going at the minute we could come away from there with a win, if we play Kuyt/Maxi & Meireles instead of Henderson & Adam form the start.

Villa played hard ball with the Stewart Downing deal.I think we went in with an original bid of £12m and they dismissed it out of hand,think the next bid was around £16m again turned down.Kenny clearly wanted Downing badly in our side and they finally done business at £20m.Downing knows the prem inside out and has fitted into our team brilliantly for me,thought he looked scary good at times on saturday.Who knows how many assists and goals he could rack up this season.It could be double figures in both for me.

Would that be worth £20m to us? I say yes.

Gervinho will probably have more goals and assists than our 3 lads combined eek

Lucas was brilliant last year mate,our player of the season.You wouldn't believe how highly this lad's rated in Brazil and at Melwood.He's one of the first names on the sheet for me.He divides opinion but he's turning into a top defensive midfielder and will play more games than most again this season.

That's garbage mate.Me nor anyone i know thinks we have the right to be on top.Absoloute nonsense.Most of us though expect Liverpool to challenge at the top end of the league.We're 18 times champions of england of course we expect to challenge!!The year i go into the season not expecting us to challenge for the league i'll fill my boots with cement and jump in the Mersey. Everyone who think's we're fucked after a poor 45 mins on Saturday needs to get a grip. I've even heard people saying our season is over after 1 draw (not necessarily on here). Well then i guess Chelsea's and Arsenal's must be too eh???

People still slating Lucas? Some things will never change. He was our best player last season and the lad was one of the only players (along with Enrique & Agger) who actually turned up for the 90 minutes on Saturday.

On saturday's game....it was a frustrating result. The first half was outstanding at times. We went at them from all angles and we should have been well clear at HT. I'd love to know what happened from around 50 mins on. It's like the tank just went empty and we fell away. It was a game of 2 halves as they say Tongue

I thought we played great stuff in the first half on saturday but the second 45 mins was a major disappointment. On another day (without fucking Dowd reffing) we could have seen Richardson off, Suarez bury the penalty and Carroll's goal rightly allowed but the second half performance was still shocking. All the cohesion and slick passing we saw in the first half disappeared and the players looked very unfit. I don't think saying "oh it was the start of the season, it'll get better" is an excuse for the lack of fitness because by definition it's the season and all these games count.

Another criticism I'd have, and yes it's a criticism of King Kenny, is why the hell did Flanagan start over Martin Kelly. I know he did good in his appearances last year, but it was good for an 18 yr old thrown into the first team. He still showed signs of being vulnerable. I know Kelly isn't a whole pile more experienced but he's undoubtedly a better defender. I think even Carragher at RB and Skrtel in the centre would have been a better option. Henderson over Kuyt was another baffling decision. If Kenny wanted a midfielder there why not Meireles or, God forbid, give Aquilani a chance.

I think Downing will be a good signing for us. Yes we paid about 8 million too much but that's the market but Kenny rightly identified him as a necessity and we shelled out the necessary cash. I don't think he'll be spectacular but around 8 goals and 8 assists a season would be a great return. Still think we need a centre-back but I have a feeling that'll be sorted before the 1st of September. As long as the fitness improves I think we're on target for 4th, anything else is a bonus.

Flanagan got the start because he had the shirt for the last 7-8 games last season and did fantastically well. He didnt deserve to lose his place. He was exposed on Saturday because he had nobody tracking back in the second half to help him deal with Larsson and their left back when they came at him. He had to deal with 2 players attacking him and didnt know whether to go to the ball or track the overlap. He got drawn in to the centre for their goal and mised Larsson at the back post but that was because the centre backs were drawn out to the ball when it was being crossed. I play at right back for my team and in that position you're coached to cover the centre back when they're drawn out wide in situations like that. The winger playing in front of you is then supposed to cover you. This didnt happen all day on the right. It's basic defensive coaching and I'm surprised this wasnt addressed. When Kenny put Kuyt on, he put him on up front so his usual defensive work didnt help Flanagan. The lad is still learning and has a big big future.

If Andy Carroll comes good then great but I still & untill we start playing how I know we can given the squad we've got then the signing of Carroll by Kenny will always piss me off, I'm not gonna change my thoughts on us playing 4-3-3 as I know this is the best formation to play in the moden game with the moden players, look at our squad without Carroll & you'll see for yourself!!!

I totally agree on Jordan Henderson but he should be played in the centre where he'll fulfil his full potential, he's never been a right winger. he'll take the place of Steven Gerrard & Raul Meireles in 4 or 5 years & he'll still only be about 25.

Stewart Downing is a good player & will fit into our team very very well no matter what formation we play.

We may be 18 times champions but when did number 18 come & what have we ever done since then in the Premier League era, we've finished 2nd about twice but even then I didn't feel like we were in a title challenge. We've won the European Cup an English record 5 times but we don't expect to challenge for it every year, thats because we're not in it every year & thats down to our league form.

We share many opinions on here mate but being a Scouser you'll always be a bit more forceful'ish (If thats the right word... Or even a word at all) in your opinion as it's obviously closer to home & an everyday thing for you.

I personally though Martin Kelly would start as right back when Glen Jonhson got injured as he's the better defender, even though John Flanagan did well at the end of last season he's still only 17 or 18 the same reason I couldn't understand Jordan Henderson started instead of Dirk Kuyt with Maxi not even in the squad.

ah spoken like a true Manc, taking after the manager and not being able to give any other teams credit! lets have a look at Man Utd, Da Gay looks shaky young and needs to learn, Fabio raffel both look vulnerable and have been taught in the Gary Neville school of grab defense but are no where near as clever at it (yes Gary Neville clever at something other than coloring in) Ferdi over rated and Injured, Vidic gets caught out by fast strong forwards easily, Anderson, dog pile, Cleverly over rated based on 1 half decent game, Valancia OK player as is Park, Nani 1 kick and hes out the game, Rooney is class and Hernadez knows where the goal, Young is ok. Man utd will struggle this season as they have no Central Midfield, any decent team would of beaten them on Sunday. As for competing with them a 3-2 loss away and then a 3-1 win at home pretty even there, so yes I ment league titles neither Man U or Liverpool will win it this season so in 2 years we will = 19
