Greatest club sides

Here's a thread that I hope will be interesting:- Which was your greatest club side? I know a lot people will say that one side was better than the other, but on this thread I'm looking to see some intesting posts! so to start it off as as a QPR fan, I think our 1977/78 side was our best side though I'm sure many other QPR fans on here will probably go for our 2011 Championship team!! But I feel our 77/78 was our best ever side.
Mainly, because I think we had several good playmakers and ball playing skills.

so over to the rest of you:- what was your club's best ever side? Do you think that your club's teams of the past are better than the current squads of your team?

mine would have to be liverpool 76/77 or 77/78 sides because they had goals all over the pitch and they were the first english side to win back to back european cups when it was harder to win then it is now.

The old European cup only had about 1 or 2 great sides in it every year. The CL has several teams who could win it every year. The old Uefa cup was harder to win then the old European cup. You had the 2nd and 3rd beat teams in it every year.

No way was the old format European cup harder to win. No side has retained the CL since 1990, though I fancy Barcelona to maybe break that record this season.

*You had to win almost every game as it was straight knockout from the start of the competition.

*No seeding

*No country protection ( Forrest knocked us out in the first round as defending champs in the 78/79 tournament)

The old format was harder to win i'd say.

How about the Ajax team that won the European Cup in 1995.

Yes, but once in it makes it easier. You only have to worry about beating one, German, Italian or Spanish team, unless it was the holders who were different from the league champions of that country. You could pretty much determine only one or two sides going on to win the old European cup. Now Barca are favourites, but there's several other clubs who are capable of making the final.

But often against weaker opposition. The old European cup a good side may only have to beat one other good team and they're in the final.

Not sure that matters much. There's no seeding into the last 8, so that's only a couple of more rounds then the old format. If anything it makes winning it harder because all the strong teams are safely through to the last 8.

That only works up to the last 8. There was no country protection but how many times did two teams from the same country play eachother under the old format? It was rare enough for it not to be considered an issue

Don't agree. Real Madrid won 5 in a row. Ajax and Bayern Munich 3 in a row. This current Barca side may make 3 in a row but it's still unlikely.

There's too many strong teams in the CL now, and that's why nobody has retained it since 1990.

The old European cup had one or two great teams, and couple of good teams, and the rest were mediocre or poor.

In 1967, Celtic became the first British team, and only Scottish team, to win the European Cup.they became known as the Lisbon Lions and were all born within a 30-mile radius of Parkhead. truly remarkable!!

well there are 3 Bristol city teams that spring to mind
first of is the team of 1976 the year we got back into the top division

Ray Cashley, Gerry Sweeney, Brian Drysdale, Gerry Gow, Gary Collier, Geoff Merrick, Trevor Tainton, Tom Ritchie, Donnie Gillies, Paul Cheesley, Clive Whitehead, Jimmy Mann.

that is a list of BCFC royalty, most of the players were local with a few scots thrown in the mix,

hard to think that every one of these players would be go by 1980 as we went bankrupt, which leads me to the next team

the team of 1986 that won the Freight Rover Trophy.

just 4 years before we were 92 in the league with no money at all, so we built a team with kids and non league players and journeymen this was a big achievement on a shoestring budget,

and lastly the promotion winning team of 2007

Basso; Orr, McCombe, Carey, McAllister; Betsy, Johnson, Skuse , Russell, Wilson; Noble, Jevons, Showunmi, Smith, Thomas.

a team of no big names but what a team, i have never seen a city team play for each outer like they did, most of these players have now gone back down the leagues to obscurity but for one moment they were great and for me thats what makes a great team not star names but good players doing there best for each outer
