UFC 142: Aldo v Mendes ESPN 3am
Edson Barboza v Terry Etim
Edson Barboza returns to his home city to fight his 2nd Englishman in a row in front of his home crowd after winning a split decision over Ross Pearson. Not your typical BBJ fighter Barboza is a black belt Muay Thai fighter with a kick boxing record of 25-3, 22 KO's & has won all 9 of his MMA fights with his last 2 earning him the fight of the night.
Somewhat surprisingly Terry Etim will be fighting in the UFC for the 10th time having signed in 2007 (6-3, 15-3 overall) with 4 Submission of the Night awards. This is a dead cert for fight of the night or sub/TKO of the night award with Etim having finished his last 5, last 4 via sub. It's a tough fight to call especially with Barboza fighting in his home city but Terry Etim seems like a very calm fighter. -
Etim Submission
Erick Silva v Carlo Prater
To be honest I've never heard of either of these Brazilians. Erik Silva (13-1) has never fought outside of Brazil & is fighting for the second time in the UFC having been on the last card in Rio. Carlo Prater (29-10) is making his UFC debut. -
Prater Submission
Rousimar Palhares v Mike Massenzio
Rousimar Palhares has been in the UFC a few years now gaining a (6-2) record (13-3 overall) but is yet to really make a mark for himself having fought a few top names, but he's one of the best BBJ fighters in the UFC & has improved his striking of late & will be looking to earn his 3rd straight victory against fellow BBJ black belt Mike Massenzio who having lost only 2 of his 13 fight before joining the UFC where he's 2-3 having fought a few decent opponents. -
Palhares submisson
Vitor Belfort v Anthony Johnson
Having failed to make the 185lb limit & being find 20% of his earnings Anthony Johnson who weighed in at 197lbs will have to weigh in again on the day of the fight as Vitor Belfort has said he will only fight if Johnson isn't over 205lbs, if Johnson is over 205lbs then the fight will be cancelled.
If the fight does go ahead it looks like being a very exciting albeit short fight with Vitor fighting in his home city for the first time in his career & he'll be looking to get back into the title picture having been TKO'd by the informous Anderson Silva front kick before winning KO of the night against Yoshihiro Akiyama. The Silva loss was his only loss in his last 7, 5 of which he won via KO including his last 4 all but 1 of his 5 KO's have come in the 1st round.
Having gained a good name for himself at welterweight 'Rumble' Johnson is making his middleweight debut albeit at a catchweight but he no doubt has the tallent to be a big name in this division but it's gonna be a though test against 'The phenom' in Brazil, Johnson is a good wrestler with KO power but Belfort not only has KO power & some but is also lightning fast & holds black belts in BJJ, Judo & Shotokan Karate. -
Belfort TKO
José Aldo v Chad Mendes
Having won all of his 11 fights Chad Mendes gets his title shot but for someone who's mostly a wrestler 7 of his 11 wins are by decision which tells you he's gonna have to go the distance of 5 rounds for the first time against the champion.
Here's a few stats.
Chad Mendes has a
68% takedown accuracy
José Aldo has a
94% takedown defence, takdown accuracy
60%
Chad Mendes has a striking defence of
74%, accuracy
47%
José Aldo has a striking accuracy of
49% -
Aldo TKO
