Neil's forum needs all the help it can get, so the Googlebot counts. His forum is a great example of what happens when you turn a forum into a fan site, as it clearly shows that it doesn't work, and how the forum/site just dies on its arse. Well, I know I'm jumping the gun a bit, and I may end up with egg on my face.

But I think it's safe to say, that sometime today, we will break through the magical 40,000 members mark.

That means we will have added 20,000 members in less than a year, or doubled our membership.

That's one phenomenal growth rate.

If the forum membership doubles every year then the total membership will be 10.5 billion in eighteen years time (twenty years after the forum was started) when the Earth's total population will be 9 billion at most.

Assuming that faster-than-light travel is impossible, then only aliens living within a ten light year radius of earth will be aware of the existence of the forum and have had time to apply for membership.

It follows that in the year 2028 at least one and a half thousand million forum members will be from the following star systems:

alpha Centauri
Barnard's star
Wolf 359
Lalande 21185
Sirius
Lutyen 726-8
Ross 154.

Ordinarily you would get a treat, but you completely forgot about our closest neighbouring star system of Proxima and frankly, they're a bit pissed off about it. They said they were coming to kick your ass, which is bad for you cause they each have 4 legs!

I dispute this reasoning. Surely it is not necessary to travel to Earth to be aware of this forum's existence? Can't those in other star systems access the internet without having to come all the way here to do so?

Hey Shady I was careful to say star system as proxima Centauri is almost certainly part of the alpha Centaurus system. And as for kicking my ass, it's their tentacles I'm worried about not their legs. Still I've got eight years to get the lube in.

By all accounts, there's an earth-like planet called Gliese 581G orbiting in the "Goldilocks zone" in a solar system only 20 light years* from here. We should be able to get anyone living there to sign up, provided we're all very patient and someone has a wireless modem with a really strong signal. We might have to wait a while for them to activate their account and I wouldn't count on a speedy response to any PM's though...

* That's a pretty big "only", but in galactic terms we're practically jostling elbows

Sorry to disappoint you trevor but not even the internet can travel faster than light. Perhaps we can continue this discussion in the Realativistic Physics thread.

Or will it? 40,000 user accounts, yes. But 40,000 members? What about all those multiple accounts from the likes of lee est, Tommy, HaZ etc? Looks like we might have to wait a little longer

Thanks Mister Gummidge. I personally would reccomend that extraterrestrials sign up with Virgin as an optical cable would avoid the attenuation problem with wireless internet. Even so if a sentient jellyfish on Gliese 581G posts to speculate on the precise time at which Danica will get her tits out on a friday night it will be forty years before the post arrives by which time she may have already obliged.
