Alex Ferguson for me - he is still going strong today and looks like winning more silverware and his achievements at Aberdeen should also be taken into account breaking the domination of Celtic and Rangers to win the league and winning the Cup Winners Cup

My vote goes to Brian Clough OBE (Ole Big 'Ead), though all the candidates on the list are worthy contenders. As William H mentioned above, he took a failing Second Division side in Derby to the League title, then did it all over again with Forest, before adding back-to-back European Cups. In addition to that, there was his whole philosophy of how football should be played. His teams played a proper passing game, and he did not stand for his players giving any back chat to the referees (hence the problems at Leeds, where he told them "throw all your medals into the biggest dustbin you can find, because you won them all by cheating" Bounce

And I agree 100% with the comments about Cloughie not getting a knighthood. It was scandalous, and yes he would've got one if Thatcher annoyed

hadn't been in Downing Street. Finally, there was an endless supply of brilliant quotes. Here's my favourite:

I also reckon Brian Clough deserves this honour. Possibly the greatest manager never to have managed England, his influence was able to lead possibly unfancied teams such as Derby and Nottingham Forest to big glory within the English league and the European Cup. Nottingham Forest winning the European Cup two seasons in a row was nothing short of incredible. OK so he was outspoken, and forthright in his opinions... but what manager isn't? His quotes were legendary. I have The Damned United on dvd, and it really is one of the best football films I have ever seen. Michael Sheen played Cloughie brilliantly. Fiercely proud and respectful to the game, Brian Clough is the embodiment of English football manager. Smile

I've also voted for Cloughie for all of the previous reasons, but lets remember. He was the first manager to pay £1,000,000 for a player, so he was competing with the "big" clubs. Still great what he did but not done on a shoestring.
Just like to mention an old Wolves manager. Stan Cullis, 3 LT and 2 FA cups, he always seems to get missed out when people talk about great managers.. Smile

I'd also like to give a mention to Dario Gradi. Has been associated with and loyal to one club for almost 30 years - Crewe Alexandra. I appreciate that Crewe have never really achieved much in the game, but I think anybody who gives that kind of service to one job deserves a mention. A manager who personifies loyalty, his work within the game has helped to develop the careers of so many players.

I voted for Sir Alf, because he did what none of the others have done (World cup)
Fergusson and Paisley joint second.
Busby should have done better, with a team that contained Best, Charlton and Law.

i think busby would have done better if it was'nt for munich and dont forget he rebuilt that club, and they should have won more under best, charlton and law like you said but no1 knows what the babes would have achieved, you just have to listen to what people said about them. charlton was in awe of edwards and charlton is arguably the greatest english player of all time and still englands record goalscorer. not only man utd suffered but england also lost byrne, edwards and taylor, so a certain 17 year old brazilian wouldnt have had it all his own way in the 1958 world cup. in my opinion it will always be busby all the way.

Jack Charlton...Although he was the manager of the Rep of Ireland he is British.
He had some fanastic results in several World Cups with a very average squad.
