An open letter to channel reps

Do you find Ofcom rules restrictive? Could you deliver a better audience experience if only the rules were relaxed? For years now there seems to have been a zero tolerance policy where the slightest transgression results in a full blown investigation, management time is soaked up, 6-9 months of uncertainty, playing safe and lost audience. Most complaints, no matter how trivial, are upheld. Too often channels are fined. This isn’t true of any other program type. Hundreds of people have signed the e-Gov petition for fair treatment for adult channels. Hundreds. Does your channel support the petition? Can you help publicise it?

It doesn’t ask anything outrageous. Just that adult content is treated more or less the same as other cert 18 content like action films and strong humour with some concessions for the easily offended.

Allow encrypted channels to show cert 18 content from 9pm. Encrypted film channels can show cert 18 from 9pm so that’s fair.

Allow free to air adult channels to show cert 18 strength content from 10pm – right now that isn’t allowed even at midnight. Sexual language must be moderated, oil is banned, so is girl-girl and even gestures. But people can see non-stop killing in Rambo 3, let alone torture porn like Hostel and Saw on public service channels from 10pm. Fair? No.

Allow any channel to show adult content after midnight. ITV goes over to teleshopping, other channels flip over to psychics or poker, so why can’t other channels retransmit adult content?

Allow encrypted adult channels to show R18 content after midnight. Encryption provides adequate age verification. Channels used to show much more explicit content than today and complaints were almost non-existent.

The serious and widespread offence that Ofcom frequently refers to simply does not exist. Complaints are almost non existent. Anyone offended by gestures or use of oil is equally likely to be offended by topless babes. Far more offence is caused by X-Factor and Eastenders.

I'm afraid theres a flagrant abuse of power regarding OfCom....too many old fashioned ideals and not enough common sense I'm afraid peeps...

This Adults Viewing 'freedom after 9pm' e-Petition expires on 18th August, 2012.

It needs around 100,000 Votes to get an e-Petition debated in the House of Commons.

It is a little disappointing that there are only 332 Votes in so far.

e-Petition votes cast at 31st October, 2011 =338

e-Petition votes cast = 474 on 27th December 2011

A well intended post, eccles, and I agree with all that you say, but I think time has shown the channel producers have absolutely no interest in engaging with viewers on the subject of Ofcom.

I don't recall seeing a single post in any of the Ofcom threads from a babeshow producer.

Maybe not, but the girls do. Rochelle signed the petition and I'm sure if contacted on twitter, we could get many other girls to do so.

good point. has anyone made a list of all the girls on the babeshows? they could then be contacted on twitter and ask their followers to sign the petition

Most people interested enough to vote would probably know Ofcom's history on this subject and would realise that the current wording of the petition would give them the green light to carry out their original intention to completely remove the adult chat channels from Freeview.

Hopefully it won't get anywhere near the required vote total.

Not so. Ofcom allows the strongest possible swearing, gore and violence at 10pm and sometimes earlier. I have gust been watching Rikki Gervais Science show on E4 again, the one with the Susan Boyle/Mong jokes that went to Ofcom, and he uses the C**t word almost every sentence.

Point 2 in the petition calls for any cert 18 material to be allowed free-to-air after 10pm.

That includes what the BBFC calls "sex works at 18". No plot, just stroke material intended for sexual arousal, but not full on penetration.

"Subject to adequate labelling" means being in the Adult part of the EPG or having a show name like LiveXXXBangSex. That already exists.

"Subject to ... the ability to block them" means people who dont want adult channels can lock them all out in one go. We already have that. And people can keep them but PIN protect adult channels.
