RE: Video Editing
Depends on how much you're going to be doing, what you are going to be doing with it, and what time you are prepared to sit in front of a screen learning the power at your fingers

As far as I'm concerned Sony Vegas doesn't even come close to Adobe Premier Pro if you need the power. Be warned though, it is a pro application, don't expect it to hand hold you through the process.

TBH I'd expect most people to have far more moderate needs though and Adobe Premier Elements is far more consumer, and wallet friendly and still more than most people will ever use. Or try the competing Corel VideoStudio Pro and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate if you really have to Big Grin

Oh, and Apple users (and yes I admit this is probably the main area Macs kill PCs) I'm sure I don't need to tell you about Apples own software as an alternative to Adobe's Wink

I don't even know who I am so you'll forgive me if I ask 'Who the f**k do you think you are?!'

RE: Video Editing
If your after a linear editing proggie, i have used both sony vegas and premier pro. Had great result from both apps. Like red as stated, premier is very "pro" and for a 1st timer can be quiet a steep learning curve. If all your need to do is string a few clips together you could use the free option of windows movie maker (however very basic)

If you wanna start throwing is some splendid special fx theres no other option than adobe after effects. Again not a simple program to use.
If your interested in this sort of thing, your 1st stop should be VideoCopilot

RE: Video Editing
Steven is specifically looking for some some PC video editing software that enables him to alter the volume of the soundtrack within different parts of the clip.

RE: Video Editing
Long time since I've even glanced at Windows Movie Maker but if I remember rightly unless you splice the audio into separate clips and adjust each one then I think you're out of luck. It is a fairly basic thing to do though so I'd expect virtually any third party software to do it. Just depends what you use on how easy it is.

I'm guessing you're not after fidelity or fine tweaking of the audio so I'll not throw in the idea of editing the audio channels as audio and then just incorporating back in after as you then add the complication of flicking back and forth to make sure everything is in sync

I'd still recommend Premier Elements, maybe overkill for just volume control, but I'm betting you'll get hooked and it'll give plenty of room to grow

RE: Video Editing
Im looking to do a bit of video editting. I mainly want to be able to cut sections out of videos. Bearing in mind I have no experience in editting at all, what programme would be suitable for me?

RE: Video Editing
There's many choices. I like and use Mpeg Streamclip. Its available for the Mac or PC platform and its free.

RE: Video Editing
I clicked the mpeg streamclip link and the description suggests its a video converter rather than an editor.

You can certainly use it to cut bits out, eg adverts, from a video as well as convert files.

RE: Video Editing
With Mpeg Streamclip you can edit out parts, cut and past them elsewhere, alter the contrast, saturation, brightness and overall volume level of a video. It fixes time breaks which are caused in raw movie formats by previous editing/cutting functions that may have occurred (e.g. on a PVR).

Should you wish to view more info before trying the app, there's a user-guide for the version I use (which is probably not the most up-to-date version) here: http://rapidshare.com/files/213035171/mp...amclip.rtf

Its also not a processor hogger like larger paid for apps are.
