The group stage saw 134 goals scored in 48 matches at an average of 2.79 a game. 44 of the goals were scored from outside the penalty area.

The final 8 of the World Cup features 5 of the seeded teams when the draw was made, with the unseeded France, Netherlands and Costa Rica completing the quarter final lineup.
