Sky Q

I looked into going from Sky + HD to Sky Q Silver today and thought I'd share some of the stupid limitations it has as explained to me by the person I spoke to at Sky.

The Sky Q Silver box is 4K/UHD ready and will record four channels while you watch a fifth channel live.

The Sky Q box is NOT 4K/UHD ready and will record three channels while you watch a forth channel live.

You can only have either one main Sky Q Silver box or one main Sky Q box per household.

Sky Q Silver package gives you the option to have up to two Sky Q mini boxes.
Sky Q package gives you the option to have one Sky Q mini box.

Sky Q mini boxes DO NOT support 4K/UHD signals and DO NOT hold any recordings meaning every recording has to be done from the single main Sky Q Silver/Sky Q box then streamed to the mini boxes via wifi.

So if you have more than one 4K/UHD tv and you want to have a Sky 4K/UHD signal going to more than one 4K/UHD tv once it's finally up and running you can't as you are limited to only one main Sky Q Silver box per household.

The Sky dish needs new components to receive the Sky Q signal as it is a completely different format to the current format Sky digital signal meaning once changed you will no longer be able to receive a signal to any additional Sky + HD boxes you may have in the home meaning you'll have to get a Sky Q Silver/Sky Q box and use the Sky Q mini boxes with all their limitations or have a second Sky dish installed and take out a seprate Sky HD subscription.

Now maybe I'm missing some point somewhere but many people have more than one Sky + HD box and record lots of different programmes/channels which makes Sky Q totally pointless unless you either live alone or are insanely rich and don't mind throwing your money away.

I found the information from Sky to be so confusing that I thought I try and lay out the facts in plain English.

I got Sky Q a few weeks back and it is indeed 4K/UHD ready; you need a 4K TV though and then have to set it up, it gives an option for 8bit and 10 bit 4k tv's. If you download a program in UHD from the option in the menus it will say 'this program requires UHD tv to play' and will set it up then as well.

And it does indeed record 4 channels and you can watch a fifth.

It cost £30 to install and £30 for the additonal HD, but they are one off payments. Has for the mini recording in UHD, I don't know not used it.

When ordering it the sales person said 'you wont have got a UHD tv', I said I had, so I assume they think most people don't have 4K tv's yet and if they did it would be the main TV and the rest will be HD.

The sky ipad app also works very fine.

One gripe it seems to freeze now and then requiring unplugging, some people think it's software related but I have noticed it takes a very long time to shut down, making you press the standby button again, it also seems to happen when flicking the tv over to watch a blu ray and leaving the Sky q box on, may be it goes gets a bit confused at times, turning the boxx off before changing over seems to work.

I may not post much on here but I need some advice or help or some one to point out something I'm missing please.
Just got sky Q installed and can't find babestation, studio 66 or any other channels on it. Has anyone else found this or am I missing something really stupid?

Sounds like you have the parentel settings on they hide the adult channels

to remove them

To change this:

Press Home on your Sky Q remote and select Settings, then Parental.
Enter your Sky TV PIN.
Select Family, then Hide adult content.
Select Off to show adult shows, or On to hide them.
Note: If you turn this setting off, your settings will no longer be family friendly. Therefore, the switch for Family setting will also show as Off. "

You may also find that sky Q constantly freezes and you have to unplug, or updates.

Both will constantly reset your settings so you may have to reset it to allow adult content.

Found this old thread on the forum and wanted to see if fellow posters have any similar experience, advice or tips please? I allegedly qualified through loyalty for a sky q upgrade and free instillation. Having waited 3 weeks, my engineer called in today and wanted to sink approximately 8 ladder bolts to my exterior walls so he could access my dish. I refused on the basis that when sky plus multi room went in this wasn’t considered necessary and I didn’t want bolt holes fixed on my property. The engineer confirmed there was nothing he could do without these to secure his ladder. I called sky afterwards who confirmed that it was a health and safety issue and if I wanted it done I should get a non sky engineer to upgrade my dish for a cost of approx £300. Sky said that they would then come back and set me up at my cost!! Has anyone else had this experience? I am very angry by the whole thing and am stunned that my free upgrade would now cost me! Any advice or tips most welcomed!
