Solid State Drive upgrade.
I have a 2009 lap top:

To be precise, and it's one with all the whistles and bells, would have been over a grand when new I got it for £120 barely used off ebay and it's still in perfect condiiton.

Now being reluctant to sell it, I'm toying with the idea of upgrading the HDD to a SSD, but this cost £110, nearly has much as the Lap top cost.

I know the benefits of SSD at loading things quicker, but I'm from an age where we use to sit and look at the blue load bar going across the screen and taking 15 mins to do it to load one web page, so waiting a minute extra is probbaly not worth the upgrade, but what I was wondering, can you run more powerful software on an SSD drive that couldn't be or is very sluggish in a HDD with them being quicker?

Is an SSD purely for the speed, temp and so on.

RE: Solid State Drive upgrade.
The ssd will load stuff quicker, but there is still a limitation on running software caused by the processor/ram and the inbuilt bus speeds etc. Quite simply, an ssd in an older pc/laptop will not be as fast as it will in a newer modern device where all the associated connections and processors are running at faster speeds as well. It will probably improve what you have, but may not reach quite the heights you might anticipate.

Personally, I'd be inclined to try a smaller capacity ssd, at a cheaper price. If it doesn't perform well enough, at least you haven't wasted so much money. If it's OK, but storage space is an issue, consider a cheap external usb drive with the money you saved on the ssd, they are pretty cheap these days, and it would allow for easy portability if you eventually upgrade the device (or buy a kit to convert the drive from the laptop into a usb drive).

For my desktop, I'm planning to upgrade to a small 64gb ssd, just to hold the operating system, all data will remain on the existing hard drives. This will improve the general performance, while retaining the storage space. The ssd was a special deal for about 30 bucks on amazon some time last year, and I've seen ebuyer offering 120gb ones for a similar price on one day deals.

RE: Solid State Drive upgrade.
to be honest it would be a pointless upgrade for that lappy. the cpu is pretty old
you would be better off getting a large capacity 2.5in 7200rpm hdd.
reason being yeah you will get faster load times on big apps like photoshop and games but that lappy isnt suitable for either.
so you may as well play to its strength.
low power draw web browser/media player. which makes the hdd the better option due to capacity for £££'s paid.
