A lot of people moaned on 606 that he didn't it fairly I would say they were right, but at the same time I think they counted all the same unless FiFA made changes to the rules concerning the Golden boot that penalties didn't count towards total and all goals scored that counted had to be from open play only or something

Many will say that they beat quality opponents and we weren't really tested until playing both Sweden & Croatia which I agree. I think for sheer team performance their win over Argentina has to be one of the standout performances of the whole tournament and Russia produced one of the best European host nation performances for quite some time. I think many didn't know what to expect with them but they certainly did Russia proud.

Now we move on to the trickier tournament of Qatar in 2022. I have had always misgivings about staging that tournament ever since it was announced and I feel Qatar must be one of the worst host nation decisions in FIFA's history which will come slap bang of a busy European soccer scene. I think FIFA should have moved the competition when they had the opportunity to do so

I think there were a few Irish as well Will VAR be used in 2022?

I do feel refereeing standards were slightly below par but I feel it is far better that VAR should follow the way that Rugby codes make decisions with referee having a link to VAR asking a them to make decision rather than the referee running to see incident on screen or the decision is viewed by one of the linesman then relaying VAR decision to referee that way referee remains on field of play.

I've analysed the performance of the respective federations at the World Cup just gone. The first table shows the percentage of points won out of those available (teams winning a penalty shoot out are awarded two points - one point for the shoot out loser). Admittedly these figures include matches where teams from the same confederation were playing each other. The second table shows the percentage of points won when confederations were in opposition (read across the rows, so S. America won just under 44% of the points available against Europe, Africa won 100% of the points against CONCACAF.)

These figures make a mockery of the allocations in the proposed expansion of the World Cup. I understand that Africa's allocation is expected to almost double and Asia’s allocation of places expected to rise from 4.5 to a guaranteed eight. Europe are expected to get only three extra places.

This article makes clear that FIFA's priorities are money and marketing rather than preserving the quality of the competition.

There's doesn't seem to be any chance of that happening.

VAR stands for Video ASSISTANT referee. It's only there to ASSIST the referee. There are no plans to make VAR the decision maker.

The essence of VAR is that the match referee remains in full control and always has the final say on any incident.

If the referee wishes to see the relevant footage for himself before making a final decision he has the right to do so.

^ That is the approved process and reasoning, as I stated upthread, yes. However you've reminded me of something that bugged me at the time and for which I've yet to see an official explanation: Why did the match refree in the England-Columbia game give a yellow card, for the head into Henderson's chest and chin, directly on the apparent sole say of the VAR? The ref, by all accounts, missed the incident live but did not come to the sideline to check the footage for himself. Are ball not in play incidents different somehow?
