The journalists relation to the UK doesn't change whether or not the scenario he is reporting on happened. There is such a thing as libel, the editor will have been aware of the journalists past and would have taken that into consideration before publishing

As for threats to British national security your boy Trump just did a deal to save Chinese company ZTE who have been deemed a threat to our security by our own intelligence services
