I agree, I think the availability of Jose took all precedence. I also thought the main reason Jose got it was he supposedly had great respect for Fergie and/or he coveted the Man Utd job, and was seen as guaranteed to bring his "special" magic after the feet-of-cardboard Moyes turned out to be such a dud.
Also they wanted a "name" boss to justify the financial investments, particularly when Moyes backfired so badly. Giving Van Gaal time to rebuild was not on.

As the Daily Mirror are reporting that they are going to sack Mourinho this weekend.

Newcastle are winning 2-0 in this evenings match

I hope he doesn't get sacked he is doing such a superb job. Lots of big talk lots of money spent and no hope of a league win.

I've never liked the guy, he's arrogant, so far up himself that any further he would meet himself at the top. I think he is on borrowed time but the owners are still backing him-could be a mistake.

Can't help supposing that being 2 down after 10 minutes, and still 2 down an hour later, makes more impression than a dramatic late escape.

Could the 2 players Mourinho has repeatedly criticized in Martial & Sanchez turn out to be his saviours much like Mark Robins was for Alex Ferguson scoring against Nottingham Forest back in 1990.Putting things into perspective though a great fairy tale comeback though it was Newcastle are languishing near the bottom of the Premiership with out a win & only 2 points to their name this season playing at Old Trafford so the victory is merely like re-arranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic.The real acid test will be in a fortnights time (after the International break) when Man U entertain Chelsea at Stamford Bridge then followed by Juventus in the CL.

Surely funniest moment this weekend came on Gillette Soccer Saturday when old 'Champagne' Charlie Nicholas & Paul Merson mentioned about Arsene Wenger being a potential replacement for Mourinho (don't do Arsene).Apparently David Blaine was being touted a potential Man U manager & he said " I'm a magician not a fuckin' miracle worker !!!".

Realistically, a convincing and trophy-chasing United should have turned over Benitez' Bumblers by a hatful. The fact they scrambled to win suggests they'll get a proper thumping against better opposition any time soon.

I'm always amused to remember "Fergie's Early Years"; even in his own book he seems to refer to signing Norwich's top scorer Peter Davenport as something he did with a gun to his head
