What a match this was, and further proof (if it were needed) of the value of the County Championship in its own right regardless of 'other priorities'. Maybe some evidence of the early season issues that are a problem for some, with the ball doing all sorts (if the skills were right). Equally though, innings could be built if the batting skill levels were up to it! Bar the absence of the out and out quicks perhaps, plenty of variety in the attacks too I thought! Looking forward to more of the same next round.

Envious of those that live next door to these matches (living here in NI where the county game has a level of following/popularity more widespread than you might think) so slightly disappointed that a bank holiday weekend didn't see sustained numbers attending.

I watched the first day live , the pitch was very green and the ball was doing a lot, there wasn't much swing in the air but this was an issue in its self as when the odd ball did swing I was catching batsmen out, the pitch was up and down one past the shoulder the next past the ankle even sir cook had to work his socks off to build a score,
It was a good watch but also showed why English batsmen don't know how to build a long innings as it was a case of trying to nick a few runs before getting a ball with your name on not really getting someone ready for test cricket,
On England watch was really impressed with Essex bowler Sam Cook looked to have a bit of pace and very accurate,

Isn't that the point though?? If you have the skill and temperament as a batsman, you can profit on what I see as proper cricket pitches - these are the tracks that should be described as 'good'. Wont hear that though, until a benign surface is presented! Not sure how you learn the skills required for the type of innings Cookie produced, on flat batting tracks?? In addition, Cookie got himself out, with a lack of concentration - starting again.

RE: County Championship 2022
Round 2 Review
I'll start with a back-dated moan regarding the fixtures, as this round saw Yorkshire & Lancashire starting their seasons off with resounding victories, but why did the fans of these Roses Rivals have to wait until the second week of the season ? After a winter off the initial round of matches are greatly anticipated, with much interest from supporters & media. a full fixture of matches should be a priority, this is now possible with both Divisions having an even number of teams, & is an opportunity missed.
Lancashire went about victory in textbook fashion, by winning the toss, compiling a big score, built around centuries from veterans, Croft & Vilas, & a quickfire 97 from new signing Salt, & then a collective bowling performance, as the follow-on was enforced, after a Crawley half-century contributed to a hundred opening stand with Ben Compton, who made an unbeaten century. Parkinson took 4 top order wickets, & 3 more in thee second innings which he bowled 47 overs with an economy of 2 runs per overs. he needs man y more matches like this if he's ever going to be considered in the Test side. Compton was last man out in the second innings after completing another century.
Surrey completed a victory over Hampshire in similar fashion, with another Pope century at The Oval, & Jamie Overton with 8 wickets in the match, not quite matching the 13 wickets of his brother Craig in the Somerset loss.
A century & an unbeaten 50 from Brook helped Yorkshire to a win over Gloucestershire, & Bracey made an impressive 177, twice taking blows to the helmet from Rauf who can bowl rapid. Bracey is showing the sort of form that got him previously selected for England.
In Div 2, forgotten man Ben Duckett scored a century, & 95 for Notts who are fancied to gain promotion, but Glamorgan pulled off a surprise victory, with 3 Aussies in their side.
Pakistan's Shan Masood score 239 in Derbyshire's first innings, which was eclipsed by Sussex captain Tom Haines who made 243, with Pujara making 201 not out, the pair added 351 for the 3rd wicket, which enabled them to secure a draw after being asked to follow-on. If Haines continues the progress he made last year he could be on the radar as a future England opener. For a 23 year old to be captaining his County, is an impressive sign.

RE: County Championship 2022
Round 3 Review
After 3 weeks of the seasons we finally see all 18 counties in action. Contrary to what many would expect, in 7 of the 9 matches side elected to bat first, but only Worcestershire went on to win. Yorkshire failed to force a victory on a flat pitch at Wantage Rd, in the only draw of the entire round. All 4 games in Div 2 resulted in innings wins, along with another 2 in Div 1. Champions Warwiickshire secured a 10 wicket win over Essex an hour after lunch on the final day.
Only the match between Surrey & Somerset provided a contest where both teams had a chance of victory. Somerset's batting woes re-surfaced in their 2nd innings, with a handy lead of 161, & 8 wickets in-hand, they could only post a target of 237. As ever their bowling unit plugged away, but Surrey got home, for a 3 wicket win.

RE: County Championship 2022
On England watch Anderson returned, get through 40+ overs in the match, wicketless until the 2nd innings, when he picked up 2-25 from 25 overs. With many of England's bowlers fighting fitness issues, it is heartening to see Reece Topley backing-up some Championship cricket, his tall left-arm option would be a welcome addition to an attack that's lacked variety, if only his fitness could be relied on. The last of his ilk to be tried, Sam Curran, made a cautious return after his own back problems, making 80 batting at 6, he may well become a batsman that bowls.
One to keep an eye out for, is Lancashire's Josh Bohannon, his 231 was the highest score in this round of matches. He is on the England radar after representing the Lions this winter. He looks a well organized player aa I recall his ton in a Roses match.
