Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - Master Yoda - 24-02-2011 01:00 After a lot of PM's back and forth between myself and lindor regarding our opinions on the subject we decided to create this thread for all us footie fans to discuss. I have also created a poll with a select few managerial names so everyone can cast their vote I hope there are no glaring omissions but i think few could argue that the names in the poll are the elite few. If people feel I have left names out then feel free to put these names forward throughout the thread. I myself have opted for Bill Shankly as the greatest. He took a struggling second division side and transformed the team and the city. Without vast amounts money, the dynasty that Liverpool FC became was down to talent spotting, motivation, tactical awareness, training techniques which were years ahead of his time. These included diet assessment and fitness training which were unheard of in football up until then. He laid the foundations for the unparallelled success that was to follow. He won 3 League titles (64,66,73), 2 FA Cups (65,74) and 1 Uefa Cup (73) as manager of Liverpool FC. However it was Shankly who introduced "The Liverpool Way" and "The Bootroom". The Bootroom was a little room where Shanks and his staff (Bob Paisley, Ruben Bennett, Joe Fagan and later Ronnie Moran and Roy Evans) met to discuss footballing ideas and tactics etc. The Bootroom (Shankly's creation) would educate Liverpool managers that went on to win 10 more league titles, 4 European Cups as well as 4 FA Cups, 5 league cups and another Uefa Cup. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Shankly Quite simply put...Bill Shankly is the reason Liverpool FC is the most successful team in English Football today. Bob Paisley runs Shanks close with 6 Leagues and 3 European Cups but Shankly got the ball rolling and made us a force. Both men are unbelievable Legends. Bill Shankly. Greatest British Football Manager of All Time. RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - bigguy01 - 24-02-2011 01:07 cloughie, ramsey RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - alexfury - 24-02-2011 01:11 alex ferguson and yes i am a man u fan but someone had to mention his name in this thread RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - Master Yoda - 24-02-2011 01:55 Sorry lads...it took a while to get the poll up and going as i was scrolling through the honours the managers had won. The honours i listed next to the choices are top flight league titles, domestic cups & league cups, European honours (European Cup, UEFA Cup, Cup Winners Cups, Fairs Cup) and international managerial honours i.e FIFA World Cup.I didnt go with charity shields, super cups or intercontinental cups because they dont really count do they?? Also the teams listed next to their names are the teams they won honours with OR the national teams they manged...even though they may have managed other club teams!!! Vote away and voice yer opinions!!!! ****my apologies for misspelling Kenny Dalglish's name in the poll...amateur mistake and very embarrassing might i add being a Liverpool fan. It cannot be rectified either!!**** RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - staggerlee - 24-02-2011 03:07 Alex Ferguson an unbaised view as I dont support any of the teams mentioned all greats but I go with Fergie RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - Master Yoda - 24-02-2011 03:08 I just noticed on my list that there are a few SIR's. Sir Alex Feguson, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Matt Busby. All these men were given their knighthoods for their contributions to football and each deserve their knighthood. But how in the name of christ, Bob Paisley OR Bill Shankly were never knighted for their contributions is beyond me. It's a bloody disgrace if you ask me The same can be said for Brian Clough. RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - alexfury - 24-02-2011 03:17 different era the royal family probably didn't give out knighthoods back then (Alf Ramsey being the exception) but you are right it is a bloody disgrace RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - Master Yoda - 24-02-2011 03:25 What about Sir Matt Busby?? He managed during Shankly's time and retired from management before both Shankly and Paisley, and also Cloughie. Surely with the way knighthoods are thrown out nowadays the royal family can look upon people like this who deserve them and award a knighthood posthumously?? Probably getting off topic now anyway, i just noticed all the Sir's and felt there should be a few more on that list RE: Greatest British Football Manager Of All Time?? - alexfury - 24-02-2011 03:31 you have a point and i would say that most if not all the names on your list deserve knighthood |
