The 2014 World Cup in stats - William H Bonney - 14-06-2014 15:22

I know we have a thread on the World Cup already, but it's nice to have a more factual thread too, to record some facts and figures. Cool

So here are some facts from the opening 2 days of the tournament.

* Spain conceded 5 goals in a World Cup match for the first time in 64 years, since they lost 6-1 to Brazil in 1950.

* Gary Medel of Chile is currently the only player with a 100% pass completion rate (76 out of 76).

* Australia had the least possession of any team so far, 37% in their match against Chile.

* Netherlands are the only team to have less possession than the opposition but still win, beating Spain 5-1 with only 42% possession.

* Alexis Sanchez is the most fouled player so far, having been awarded 6 free kicks against Australia.

* Marcel Diaz is the hardest worker in the tournament so far, covering 12,718m against Australia.

* Andrés Iniesta has received the ball more times than anyone else so far, being passed to 78 times.

* The most common passing combination seen so far is Dani Alves passing to Oscar (happened 22 times).

* Ivica Olic of Croatia with only 11 completed passes out of 31 is currently the worst passer (35.5% success).

* Brazil conceded only 5 fouls in their match - and none were by defenders (Luiz Gustavo 2, Neymar, Oscar and Paulinho 1).

I'm suprised neither BBC or ITV have offered you a job as their stats guy

Some stats from the England-Italy match.

* Italy's pass completion rate was 93.2% - the highest in the tournament so far and the highest ever recorded in the history of the World Cup.

* England's pass completion rate was 90.8% - the highest England have ever recorded in a World Cup match.

* Pirlo attempted 108 passes - the highest in the tournament so far (103 were successful).

* Gerrard was England's biggest passer with 67 (62 were successful), followed by Johnson with 60 (54 successful).

* Pirlo had 117 touches of the ball - the highest in the tournament so far.

* Johnson had the most touches for England with 82. Rooney touched the ball the least of any England outfield player.

* The match was the cleanest in the tournament so far in 2 ways - only 19 fouls and only 1 yellow card.

* Despite losing 2-1 England had more goal attempts, 18 to Italy's 13, and more corners as well, 9 to Italy's 2.

* Only 5 of England's 18 attempts were on target. Sterling missed with all 4 of his attempts and Rooney missed with all 3 of his.

* Sirigu was the busiest goalkeeper with 45 touches to Hart's 27 - and 4 saves to Hart's 1 (though Italy also hit the bar and the post).

These stats show a big improvement for England from the match against Italy in Euro 2012. The goal attempts of 18 to 13 in England's favour compares to 12 for England in 2012 and 47 for Italy (although that game did include 30 mins extra time).

Stats update after the 3rd day of the tournament.

* Cote D'Ivoire now have the most goal attempts, with 21 against Japan. The Netherlands have the most on target with 10 against Spain.

* Joel Campbell of Costa Rica is now the most fouled player, having been awarded 7 free kicks against Uruguay.

* Andrea Pirlo is now the most passed to player, receiving 107 passes against England (as well as being the most passing player).

* The most common passing combination is now Daniele De Rossi passing to Andrea Pirlo (happened 27 times against England).

* Wayne Rooney covered the most ground of England players against Italy (11,223m), but touched the ball the least except for keeper Joe Hart.

Is it right there have been more goals score in this tournament at this same stage than in 2010?

RE: The 2014 World Cup in stats - William H Bonney - 16-06-2014 11:50

Yes there have certainly been more goals scored in this tournament than at the same stage in 2010. More than double in fact.

Stats update after the 4th day of the tournament.

* The first 11 matches of the 2014 World Cup have seen 37 goals scored, compared to only 18 goals scored from the first 11 matches in 2010.

* Javier Mascherano made 99 successful passes against Bosnia, a mark also reached by Daniele De Rossi. Only Andrea Pirlo with 103 has more.

* Mascherano passed to Angel Di Maria 22 times against Bosnia, equalling the tally of Dani Alves to Oscar but behind the 27 of De Rossi to Pirlo.

* Karim Benzema had 7 attempts at goal against Honduras (scored with 2), beating the 6 by James Rodríguez against Greece (scored with 1).

* Granit Xhaka of Swizerland and Muhamed Besic and Miralem Pjanic of Bosnia became the 2nd, 3rd and 4th players to cover 12km in a match.

Blimey the Columbia player who is a keeper is 42 he could have played in the 1990 world cup albeit he would have probably been on the bench as he would have only been 18

Edit just found out he was a part of the squad for the world cup in 1994
