Actually he isn't. The England players don't get any match fees.

This is the side Capello MUST play against Slovenia to have any chance of rescuing our flagging hopes:-

JAMES
JOHNSON, TERRY, DAWSON, A COLE
BARRY
LENNON, LAMPARD, MILNER
GERRARD
ROONEY

Gerrard has to play off Rooney, as the offensive midfielder, it is his best position and gives England the best possible chance of a win. It also is the best way for Rooney to score goals, which of course is the job he is there for. Got to utilize our best positions and make the best use of our players. Sod this Heskey crap, he's not good enough and has no use. Carragher is suspended so cannot play, Dawson should come in instead. James Milner is a natural left sided winger, Lampard can play with more freedom if Barry plays as the defensive holding midfielder. annoyed

You can see the players are not happy, the system hasn't worked through the warm up games and hasnt worked in the first two group games. They looked lost, bewildered, confused and pissed off during last night's horror show. It needs to change, Capello needs to change, and England's players attitudes need to change, otherwise all the England flags are coming down very very early. SadSadannoyedannoyed

For what it's worth, Regenerated, that's the team I would have played from the start (except for Hart in goal and Ferdinand for Dawson). I think the pace of play is vital. The few (very few) bright spots last night came when we went forward with pace and played quick passes. Play at a Premier League tempo and we can trouble any defence.
But for months when people have asked me if England can win the World Cup I've said no. But if we are to have any chance we need Rooney playing at his absolute peak. He was quiet against USA and truly abysmal last night. Whichever system you play, whichever players you put around him, if Wayne Rooney can't control a football played to his feet along the ground we are not going to win many games. What's wrong with him I can't say for certain but he looks knackered to me. When he has a poor game he usually makes up for it with a great workrate but last night he seemed completely devoid of energy.
Anyway, I still think we'll beat Slovenia.

I don't think we'll win the world cup (not at this stage anyway). I'm trying to sift through last night's wreckage and think of a way to get these players enjoying playing the game again. If they can seriously improve their performances and attitudes, we may still have a chance of going late in to this tournament, but first, all the things I've said have to happen just to get us past Slovenia and into the second round.

I agree Rooney looks knackered. I hope its not an injury, or maybe some personal reasons which we don't know about, but he has been diabolical. Lampard's Chelsea form has deserted him, Lennon wasn't in any of the two games. If they're all just burned out after the premier league season then there's no chance, but thats a debate for another time and another place.

I was pretty depressed last night and this morning, but I'm trying to vent that frustration in a more constructive way, instead of just going out and buying a length of six feet long rope... bladewave

I wasn't amused at all with the lack of passion, enthusiasm & drive shown by the players last night. You could see by half time that 4-4-2 wasn't working, for the second half, imo, he should have changed the formation and played Joe Cole (god knows why he isn't getting a game) on the left, with Gerrard in the hole behind Rooney. Win the World Cup? We'll be lucky to beat Slovenia at this rate..bladewave

Everything going to plan. Same as Italia '90.

Two horrible draws followed by lucky win in third game. Out of group.

Don't panic.*

*This post may be amended after the Slovenia game in which case I will admit to being a big jessy.
